Grant Application Instructions

Organizations submitting proposals for funding to the ASAWF must be a US based 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Organizations must complete the grant application form and submit a grant narrative and budget request.

Grant Proposal Narrative

Provide a description of the work you are proposing to do to address the issue you have identified. The narrative should include the description of the specific problem or issue you will address and include data or information that supports the need for the program or project you propose.

Submit no more than 3 pages, on 8.5 x 11 paper; single spaced, pages numbered, and font no smaller than 12 point. Include the following information about your proposal plan:

  1. If this is a new program, describe how the program approach developed.
  1. What activities and strategies will you use? Why did you choose this approach and what makes you think it will be successful?
  1. If this is for an existing program, what measurable outcomes (concrete changes or benefits) have been achieved over the past year?
  1. How will the program be implemented and who is responsible for implementation?
  1. List the specific objectives (specific statements that summarize your anticipated results) and the outcomes (changes or benefits that you hope to accomplish) for the work you are planning.
  1. Evaluation – Describe how you will monitor the progress you expect to make and how you will measure that you are achieving your objectives and outcomes. What are your criteria for success?

Budget Request

You must submit both a line-item budget and a budget narrative with your proposal. The line item budget should show the specific details about the projected expenses for your proposal. Include the total budget for the program or project and the amount you are requesting from the Albert Schweitzer Animal Welfare Fund.

The budget narrative should provide a brief description of how the requested funds will be used and how you arrived at the figure. As part of the budget narrative, please list the other sources of funding that have either been committed or requested for this program/project. Please include the source, the amount requested/committed and the status.

Supplemental Materials

The following information must accompany all proposals, regardless of the size of the request. Check off each item to be sure you have enclosed everything that is needed.

For All Requests

IRS Determination Letter of 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status

Most recent financial statement that shows actual income and expenses (audited if available)

Annual operating budget (revenues and expenses) for the current fiscal year

Board of Directors List, showing terms, occupations and places of employment

Pages 1 – 6 of the most recent IRS Form 990

A one-page organizational chart

For Animal Shelters, Foster Care Programs and other organizations performing hands-on animal work (livestock, wildlife, etc.); provide 1 copy of each of the following:

Animal Admission policy

Adoption policy (include sample adoption application, contract, etc.)

Spay/neuter policy

Euthanasia policy

Final Submission Instructions:

Grant applications must be postmarked no later than January 1 to be considered for funding in June.
