Role Title / Lidar Interpretation and Mapping Volunteers
When / February 2017
Commitment / Volunteersmustbeavailable forthe all the training sessions and be prepared to undertake some practise in your own time during the training period. There is no minimum time requirement but you’ll want to practise your new mapping skills regularly, so expect to spend a minimum of one hour a week in this role.
Why WeWant You / The high-resolution digital terrain models that can be created from Airborne Laser Scanned (Lidar) data are an incredible resource for understanding historic landscapes. The models map microtopography, the small lumps and bumps that relate to past use of the landscape and allow us to identify potential archaeological features.
In order to understand A Forgotten Landscape, we will train you to identify potential features so that we can piece together how the landscape has changed over time. There’s lots of data to look at and not a muddy boot in sight, so if you like the idea of archaeology without the need to leave your armchair this is your chance!
What’s InIt For You / You’ll learn all about lidar data and how process it to identify micro-topography relating to past activity. You will learn to compare a range of sources to the lidar data, including aerial imagery, historic maps and historic environment records. This comparison will help you to interpret the landscape and identify archaeological features.
You will learn how to transcribe feature into a GIS (Geographic Information System) to contribute to the historic environment record for South Gloucestershire and Bristol.
The results of your investigations will lead to new information that can
lead to further important heritage research. They will also inform the wider landscape context of our community archaeology project at the Toot.
