CISTI Update

CISTI Document Delivery

CISTI adds the holdings of four Far East libraries to CISTI Catalogue

The holdings of four Far East libraries have been added to the CISTI Catalogue — the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC), the Korea Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (KISTI), the Science and Technology Policy Research Information Center (STPI) in Taiwan, and SUNMEDIA Co. in Japan.

This move gives CISTI clients more direct and cost-effective access to all four collections, which include more than 10,000 scientific, technical and medical (STM) articles, reports and journals. Clients will now be able to conveniently order documents from the Far East collections using CISTI's Direct Service delivery — a less expensive delivery option previously unavailable for these resources.

CISTI reduces price on loan renewals

CISTI has reduced the price for all loan renewals to $10 per renewal effective August 1, 2005. This price reduction applies to Direct, Link and Global renewals. Renewal periods for these three services remain unchanged: six weeks for Direct loans and from two to four weeks for Link and Global loans.

CISTI wins two awards for excellence in information management

CISTI's Secure Desktop Delivery (SDD) Project Team has received two prestigious federal government awards for its innovative work on a project that significantly improves access to scientific, technical and medical (STM) information for its clients in Canada and around the world.

At an event held on September 14, the Council of Federal Libraries presented the SDD team with the Agatha Bystram Award for Leadership in Information Management. Named to honour one of the federal library community's most respected leaders, the annual award recognizes excellence and innovation in the management of federal information resources and service to clients.

Public Works and Government Services Canada's Information Management Champions Committee has also recognized CISTI's work on this project. At a ceremony on September 15, Ian Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, presented the SDD team with the Information Management (IM) Community Recognition Award to honour its excellence in shareable IM practices and leadership.

Partnering with a small company, FileOpen Systems of Red Hook, New York, CISTI's SDD team developed an innovative way to deliver scanned research articles to an end-user's desktop using digital rights management (DRM) technology. Over a two-year period, the team was able to meet the challenge to deliver documents to the desktop, while speeding up access and improving efficiencies using a new Web interface that offers improved document quality. Publishers and rights holders have accepted SDD as an effective system for managing their content. SDD was released in December 2003.

Digital Stacks

CISTI has obtained permission from some publishers to provide document delivery from their electronic publications. Rather than scanning a paper copy, CISTI staff can access the electronic article and use the image to provide document delivery. End users will be provided with a paper copy in all cases to comply with copyright requirements. This new method of processing orders promises to increase internal efficiency and translate into faster turnaround time and improved document quality for clients.

For clients who prefer to receive their documents via the web, CISTI offers Secure Desktop Delivery (SDD). To learn more about CISTI's SDD service, visit http://cisti-icist.nrc.cnrc.gc.ca/docdel/about_sdd_e.html

CISTI adopts OpenURL ordering for the CISTI Catalogue

In October, CISTI implemented the OpenURL standard for document delivery from the CISTI Catalogue. The implementation was otherwise seamless for users who might have noticed a small change in the location of the order button.

NRC Research Press

NRC Research Press launches full-text HTML program for NRC journals

NRC Research Press has launched a full-text HTML edition of the Canadian Journal of Botany, starting with the September 2005 issue.. This first HTML-format journal signals the beginning of an implementation plan to bring full-text HTML to all NRC journals. Full-text HTML adds many new features and functions to electronic journals, including enhanced search capability and reference linking to external documents.

Scientific society selects NRC Research Press for publishing services

The Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) has recently selected NRC Research Press to provide publishing services for its renowned Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology (CJO).

"Following a comprehensive review of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology's operations, we determined the need to quickly adopt an online submission and peer review system, streamline our post-acceptance process and move into electronic publishing," said Hubert Drouin, Executive Director, Canadian Ophthalmological Society. "The NRC was able to meet our needs on all three fronts. We have been very impressed by their knowledge, professionalism and collaborative approach."

The CJO is the latest journal to subscribe to the Press' publishing services and the first client journal to use OSPRey, CISTI's flexible and powerful Web-based manuscript submission and peer review system.

NRC Research Press adds sixteenth journal title

NRC Research Press has recently signed an agreement with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) to become the publisher of its official journal, the Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology, starting in January 2006.

As one of its first acts as publisher and after consultations with CSEP and the broader physiology community, NRC Research Press will change the journal's name to Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism beginning with the first issue of 2006.

This bimonthly journal focuses on both basic and applied research articles that examine the relationship between the biological sciences and physical activity, fitness and health. The published research, reviews and symposia will be of interest to exercise physiologists, physical fitness and exercise rehabilitation specialists, health care professionals, as well as other basic and applied physiological scientists, nutritionists and biochemists.

NRC Research Press RSS Feed

Research Press is pleased to offer article updates and synopses through a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed. RSS feeds allow Research Press content to be shared across multiple sites.

There are two main benefits to an RSS feed:

·  Users can download RSS readers that immediately notify them of newly published articles and allow them to go directly to the content so that they no longer need to visit the journals' Table of Contents repeatedly; and

·  Web site owners can automatically include the latest Research Press content on their own pages using an RSS feed.
