Examination of Conscience – Format for Confession

Dear Confirmation Year II Candidate,

You are now entering your second year of preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation. Hopefully, through prayer and study you are feeling closer and closer to Jesus and are anticipating with excitement the day when you will receive your Confirmation. By now, you should have chosen your Sponsor and your Confirmation Saint and are developing a relationship with these special “Spiritual Cheerleaders” in your life.

This year will bring additional opportunities for you to learn your faith and serve as a disciple of Christ. You’ll be asked to continue serving according to the guidelines of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, by completing 4 more projects and completing 2 additional projects serving the Church. You’ll find in this handbook, much information to help you do this.

Service is a very important component of the Confirmation program. For truly, Christ came to serve and we, as his followers, are called to model our lives after his. The Catechism of the Catholic Church guides us in understanding that along with service, there are some other basic requirements for all who seek Confirmation:

A candidate for Confirmation who has attained the age of reason must

* profess the faith

* be in the state of grace

* have the intention of receiving the sacrament

* be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ,

both within the ecclesial (church) community and

in temporal (daily) affairs.

(Paragraph #1319)

This packet is designed to help you stay on track in trying to meet these goals. There is also a list of dates when certain components are due. Be sure to record the due dates on your calendar at home so you will turn in your assignments on time.

It is important for you to understand that the Bishop relies upon the people who have prepared you for reception of the Sacrament to attest to the fact that you have completed the requirements outlined in the Catechism and are ready to assume the role of a fully initiated Catholic. We cannot honestly do this if you have not proven your desire and readiness.

If you have any questions or concerns about Confirmation or any aspect of preparing for the sacrament, please feel free to call or come see me. My ministry is to help you along your journey toward Christ.

May you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life now and always.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Penny Giunta

Director of Confirmation

Prayers and doctrine to know from memory:

OUR FATHER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thouamong women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen

GLORY BE

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it wasin the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven. And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all other evil spirits, who wander through the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your love.

Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created, and You will renew the face of the earth.

MEMORARE

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee O virgin of virgins my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.

Five Facts About the Media

  1. The media is a business.

One myth about media is that it is primarily concerned with entertainment or providing information. Rather, its primary objective is to gain the attention of an audience.

Once the media has the attention of an audience, it can ask for and collect the fees of advertisers who wish to reach that audience. Media producers identify hooks that will gain that audience’s attention. These may include violence, explicit sexuality, crude language, humor or unexpected plot twists.

  1. The media is only interested in the “right” kinds of people.

Not all parts of the total audience have equal value to the media. A television or radio program, for example, will have to be directed to the kind of audience the advertisers wish to reach. Women, ages 18 to 49, remain the most desirable audience for advertisers during daytime viewing hours. The male audience is the target for prime time television. In spite of recent shifts in the family structure, males have the largest disposable income.

3. The media is not always in touch with the average consumer.

Consider these statistics: In a recent 10-year period, 55 per cent of the top money-grossing films were G or PG rated; only 25 per cent were R-rated films. Yet R-rated films accounted for more than 60 per cent of the films released during that period. According to this example, what the audience was interested in was not important to the movie producers.

4. The media does not accurately reflect reality.

In television programming, people are portrayed to the extreme: for example, happier, angrier, more violent than is the norm. News coverage also has built-in constraints. Television news is limited not only by time, but also by its ability to hold the right kind of audience. That means that the newsworthiness of a lead story is judged primarily by its appeal to the 18 to 49 year old viewer.

  1. The media can shape the culture.

In a society of consumerism where material goods define a great deal about who we are, the media has a role in shaping the “right” kinds of consumer goods, the right cars to drive, the right shoes to wear or even the right sodas to drink.
