SW REGION – OFFSHORE SAIL TRAINING WEEK –JULY 2010

1.An offshore sail training week has been arranged for Saturday 24thJuly to Saturday 31st July 2010. Sponsored by the Region GPF, there are 6cadet places available. A RN yacht, based at Jupiter Point, Torpoint, Plymouthhas been chartered for the week. Sqn Ldr John Rooke RAFVR(T)(Retd), who is Yachtmaster offshore qualified will skipper the boat. He will be assisted by C/I Keith Brooks (P&C Wing) as Mate.

AIM OF THE COURSE

2.The aim of the course is to introduce participants to a shipboard life, and through tuition and experience develop teamwork, leadership skills, sea awareness, and skill in all shipboard operations. The course include briefings/instruction on safety procedures, fire fighting, man overboard procedures and watch keeping routines including navigation

ELEGIBILITY

3. This course is open to Cadets aged 16 years or over. All participants should be competent swimmers and should have passed the ATC basic swimming competence test. All should be sufficientlyfit to undergo strenuous activity. All crew are expected to take part in all activities including cooking and chores.

4.The cost of the week will be £45. This cost will include all meals on board. However the opportunity to eat out in a port may be taken at extra cost. The skipper knows several restaurants where sailing crews are welcomed.

5.There are 6 places available for SW Region. Application to be made on Annex A to this letter accompanied by the appropriate cheque to reach this RHQ by Friday 4hJune. Successful applicants will be advised shortly thereafter and will be sent a medical questionnaire plus a kit list. Unsuccessful applicants will have their cheque returned promptly.

6.No firm programme can yet be arranged but a similar trip last year visitedSalcombe, DartmouthBrixham, if weather conditions permit the Isles of Scilly is a possibility.

7.This course will assemble during the afternoon of Saturday 24th July and disperse late afternoon Saturday 31st July 2010. Transport arrangements will be advised in due course. 8.This training week may be counted as a Gold level residential week for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. It is also worth noting, that in terms of value for money, a similar week on the open market would costin excess of £300.
