MOBILE PHONE

Use of mobiles as phones on expedition can destroy the sense of isolation and solitude, core to the learning and self-reliance of this section. Use of a mobile phone as a means of capturing evidence is permitted. I will take the numbers from two members of each group, for each day of the trial as safety tools to be used for emergencies. (1 switched on per day)

Groups need to concentrate and communicate when walking, so the use of personal music players while journeying is not allowed as this potentially is very dangerous.

HELPFUL POINTS

I have listed some general points for you to think about before the test.

Get up early and go to sleep early

  • Walking –The whole group need to really look at the map and jointly decide the direction before moving. The person walking at the front of the group should have a map. Take turns navigating.
  • Maps -These maps are expensive, therefore at night you must put your map somewhere dry and safe. We do not expect to see maps lying about outside tents. All maps should be returned intact.
  • Compasses - Again these are vital to make sure that the map is the correct way round (orientated). You need to remember how to take a bearing. These must be looked at often whilst you are walking. They should be kept with your maps somewhere safe and dry at night.
  • Each group is a Unit -This means that the group should have food and cook as a group. Walk together, camp as a group – don’t share other groups’ tents. Your group may not make one of the camp sites and may have to camp elsewhere. Look after each other, it is NOT GOOD cooking just for yourself, or walking at the back all the time, playing catch-up, or never leading. Nobody should be made to feel ‘left out’.
  • Food –Your cooking habits will be assessed. Use lightweight dehydrated food for easy carrying please. Remember this is all about teamwork and co-operation so cook a meal on each of the two nights as a group.
  • Blisters - These occur quite often and especially in hot weather so to avoid them, make sure your boots fit and wear a pair of proper walking socks. Make sure your socks don’t have creases. If you tend to get blisters, take some ‘compeed plasters’, especially made for blister sufferers. You could put them on before setting off.
  • Tents - Should be pitched at least 10 metres apart in case of fire (10 large strides). Always dry out your tent by hanging it up for about 24 hours after an expedition.
  • Sun cream and hat (Seasonal) -The weather can do anything but chances are that it may be hot at times. A few years ago a student became very ill and couldn’t continue after walking with his shirt off and with no sun protection. He was the colour of a cooked lobster. It is so important to cover up with protective cream and have t shirts with sleeves.
  • Leave no litter – Leave nothing but footprints take nothing but memories
