John Dungan, son of James and Rebecca (Wells) Dungan, b. 1754, d. Mar. 22, 1798, in his 45th year
(Tombstone Southampton). m. ca. 1776, Mary (Bennett?).
"May 7, 1782, John Dungan, of Lower Dublin Township, Philadelphia County, Pa., Schoolmaster, and
Mary his wife; Benjamin Dungan and Mary his wife, conveyed a tract of land to Jesse Dungan. The deed
recites that March 9, 1753, John and Esther Wells conveyed to James Dungan, father of said John,
Benjamin (p. 155) and Jesse, 167 acres in Lower Dublin, and that said James made his will Feb. 4,
1782, leaving to his son John '7 acres adjoining the house where he now lives', part of the aforesaid 167
acres, and remainder to his sons Benjamin and Jesse." (Phila. Deed Book H. 3, page 184). The part
that went to John, was on the road between Oxford and Lower Dublin and adjoined land of Joseph
Shallcross and John Paul.
John Dungan served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Company,
Philadelphia County Militia, Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin McVaugh, 1780, Captain Thomas Holmes. (PA

The surname of John Dungan's wife Mary, has not been preserved. The will of John Bennett, of
Northampton Township, Bucks County, Pa., dated Feb. 27, 1802, pr. Dec. 7, 1803, mentions son Lot,

16, 1798, mentions sons: Uriah and Jonathan; daughters: Esther and Elizabeth. Executors: wife Mary

Continuing from the Justice genealogy of the Clarke and Dungans:
p. 154
"Lieutenant Jonathan Dungan, son of James and Rebecca (Wells) Dungan, b. circa 1752. m. circa?
1771, Mary Holmes.
He was a soldier of the Revolutionary War, serving as a Lieutenant in Colonel Benjamin McVaugh's 2nd
Battalion, 2nd Company, Philadelphia County Militia, Major John Holmes, Captain Thomas Holmes, and
Ensign Enoch Holmes. His brother Benjamin Dungan [[my ancestor]] was Captain of the 1st Company
of the same Battalion. (PA Archives, 6th Series, Vol. I, p. 480 and 689) (1780 and 1781).
April 16, 1774, Jonathan Dungan, of Cheltenham, Lower Dublin Township, Philadelpia County, Yeoman,
bought a messuage and two parcels of land situated in Oxford Township from the executors of Robert
Harper, of Northern Liberties, Philadelphia.
April 20, 1775, Jonathan Dungan, of Lower Dublin Township, Philadelphia County, Miller, and Mary his
wife, conveyed the above mentioned properties to William Harper, of Oxford Township, Hatter. One of
these tracts was situated on Bristol road adjoining land of Henry Paul, the other tract adjoined land of
Robert Adams, Thomas Kent and Joseph Woolen.
April 24, 1777, Jonathan and Mary acknowledged the deed before a Justice of the Peace (Philadelphia
Deed Book D. I. p. 66). Jonathan and Mary Dungan were witnesses to the will of Jane Holme, of Lower
Dublin Township, Philadelphia County, Pa., widow, dated April 13, 1785, proved May 25, 1793. She
mentions children: John, Thomas, Abel, Enoch, Hannah Keen, and Priscilla Cox; grandchild: Jane
Holme, daughter of Abel.
Executors: John and Thomas Holme.
In 1801, Jonathan and Thomas Dungan were Grocers and their place of business was on High (now
Market St.) near Delaware Ave. (Philadelphia Directory).
In 1805, Jonathan Dungan (possibly a son of Jonathan and Mary) was a Tavern keeper on Little 7th
Street, Philadelphia.
So far as it appears, neither Jonathan or Mary Dungan left a will and there is no record of Letters of
Administration on their estates.
Issue: Robert, Thomas, Benjamin, Susan, Sarah and Jonathan."
If you would like further information about the descendants of Jonathan and Mary, let me know the
specific line.

from on 31 Oct 2003 but (May06) this now at:
DUNGAN FAMILY. Reverend Thomas DUNGAN, the great-grandfather of John DUNGAN, mentioned in
the preceding sketch, was born in London, England, about the year 1632. His father, William DUNGAN,
was a merchant of London, and was of a cadet branch of the DUNGANS of Dublin, Ireland, ennobled by
Queen Elizabeth. The senior branch ended under the following circumstances: William DUNGAN, Earl
of Limerick, died in 1698, without leaving issue, in consequence of the death of his son, Lord Walter
DUNGAN, colonel of dragoons at the Boyne, in 1690. The title of Earl of Limerick, then came to Colonel
Thomas DUNGAN, brother of the Earl of Limerick. Thomas, under the will of his father, Sir John
DUNGAN, baronet, inherited an estate in the Queen’s county, and served in the army of Louis XIV till
1678 as colonel of an Irish regiment, worth to him about 5,000 pounds per annum. He had from Charles
II a life pension of 500 pounds a year: was made lieutenant governor of Tangier, in Morocco, and
subsequently governor of New York in America. The title of Earl of Limerick ceased in the DUNGAN
family on the death of Colonel Thomas DUNGAN in December 1715, he leaving no heirs. William
DUNGAN died in London in 1636, leaving four children, Barbara, William, Frances, and Thomas. The
mother of Rev. Thomas DUNGAN was Frances LATHAM, daughter of Lewis LATHAM, sergeant
falconer to Charles I. She had married (first) Lord WESTON and (second) William DUNGAN, and soon
after the latter’s death married Captain Jeremiah CLARKE, and with him and her children emigrated to
New England and settled in Newport, Rhode Island, where Captain Clarke became prominent, serving
in the provincial assembly and filling other official positions. He died in 1651, and his widow married
(fourth) Rev. William VAUGHAN, paster of the first Baptist church in America. Mrs. VAUGHAN died in
September 1677, at the age of sixty-seven years.
Thomas DUNGAN came to Newport, Rhode Island, in 1637, with his mother and stepfather, Captain
CLARKE, and was reared and educated in that colony, probably receiving his education in a school
established there by Roger WILLIAMS. His second stepfather being a Baptist clergyman he imbibed that
faith and became an eminent Baptist preacher. He was a representative in the colonial assembly of
Rhode Island, 1678-81, and a sergeant in the Newport militia. He became one of the patentees of East
