EGU February 3rd

Agenda: Report Backs, guests (Alex & Stefano), Shelley’s offer

Alex, GWS: Stefano, running for President of ASUA, graduate outreach, grad students are able to vote in ASUA elections, Stefano’s been a grad student ally

Stefano Saltalamacchia: Trey Cox, current ASUA president, current budget is 2.1 million (student service fees, zona zoo, etc.)—Berkeley is a good model for ASUA, Stefano’s involvement at Citrus in Glendora, working with governor, first LGBTQ caucus in state of California—necessary for ASUA President to make grad student interests separate from undergrad interests, needs support from students—questions: gameplan? Livable wages and health insurance options for grad students are two of his main causes. Also: grad student liaison for grad students—associated student office, legal services—lack of diversity in ASUA, not thinking about the needs of our students during times of crisis (e.g.), “unique time in American history”—does ASUA speak directly to state legislators? Stefano’s experience with marching on the Capitol in CA against higher education budget cuts, also NOT MY PRESIDENT protest at UA (but there’s overall apathy in the ASUA), ASUA has influence on ABOR members, etc.—possible endorsement from EGU? We’ll be provided with materials to share with grad student colleagues and undergraduate students—we are allowed to endorse candidates openly and officially.

Report backs:

CW—$42,000 in app fees and it doesn’t go back into CW program, Ander working on it—fundraiser: penny wars, etc. in April

WRIPACA—subcommittee meeting Tuesday, policy, structure guidelines, what do we want included?

D & I—discrimination issue--service dog

GPSC—campification of Pink Hotel, Noam Chomsky office hours, Capitol talk is up in the air

GLCC—nothing this week

ELL—2018 move to 36 credit program (from 33), they’re putting in a proposal right now

RCTE—report backs for curriculum and WP next time

Shelley’s opportunity? Fundraising—screen a film in the courtyard—requesting that people bring a book to donate might be better

Co-Chairs—meeting with Lee, finalizing response from external reviewers, two weeks to move through the College, supposedly the College wants us to get a 2-1, negotiation between College and Provost

Another thing: writing program fellowships, supposed to be research fellowships but this year they were different, linked up with teaching—what about resources for other funding? Lee has a few resources to fund fellowships specifically for research, good news for some people but not necessarily ELL or SLAT, these will definitely be broad research fellowships that include everyone, from Susan’s perspective, a problem of ethics—money for these fellowships comes from the royalties from the WP textbooks.

Preceptorship certificate? Lee is hoping to cobble something together: preceptorship counts as 4 credits a semester, training counts as 2 credits (but there’s a slight glitch here because the training starts during the summer), and then some sort of elective in each program/teaching practicum, or maybe a mentorship, those who have already gone through everything can retroactively apply for the certificate in teaching

Lee’s proposal? Jennifer Jenkins is an archivist every year at film preservation thing in Maine, is it possible to have grad student intern go with her? Problem is: finding money! $500 from travel grant fund—good opportunity, but taking the money from tg fund is contentious. Finding money to match EGU contribution? What about alumni, etc.?

Department meeting—first thing, proposal for the degree in the humanities (PAH); second thing, donor is leaving her whole house to the department of English (to house visiting scholars, etc.)—third, RCTE hire, 3 candidates, most of the meeting included arguments for/against the three candidates—fourth, CW degree is changing, but it’s mostly undergrad

Reminder: money in EGU travel grant, still—so we should apply!

Also: English dept. mission statement
