Improve levels of enterprise and job creation in the local economy / James Roberts / Yes / Green /
  • The Tamworth 4 Business service delivered by BDS is nearing its completion. The BEP Board received an update on progress at its meeting in December 2013, with most targets being delivered at or beyond target. The only target not being met was for the number of strategic reviews of existing businesses being carried out, but a more concerted marketing effort was being planned to try to bring this up to target. As a legacy to Tamworth 4 Business, Tamworth Borough Council has commissioned a contract to deliver support services jointly for private sector businesses and voluntary and community organisations, including social enterprises, which is due to start in April 2014.
  • The BEP and Shared Service in Economic Development continue to facilitate and/or influence other organisations (principally the LEPs) in order to continue to make progress against the objectives of the Economic Strategy 2011. In addition, this strategy is currently being re-drafted in order to concentrate on fewer, more outcome driven activities, as well as things where the BEP can add real value to what is already being delivered. This will be published in early Spring 2014.
Highlights of activities delivered or facilitated over recent months include the delivery of a Place Marketing project to lead to better promotion of Tamworth and Lichfield as a place for business investment, delivery of successful business events including a business support event in October and the 'Think Local 4 Business Show' in November, development of better communication channels to businesses, the continuation of the delivery and promotion of a variety of business support programmes across both LEPs and planning for a programme of strategic business engagement to liaise with the most important businesses across both districts, due to commence in March 2014. In addition, we continue to input into and exert influence over the emerging proposals to bid for the Single Local Growth Fund, as well as allocate spending for the new European Structural and Investment Funds via both LEPs, with a view to maximising opportunities and benefits to Tamworth.
