Agenda for the ESL Family Night

An ESL Family Night is to inform parents about how the ESL program works, principles of language acquisition, ESL assessment, and how to promote the academic success of their children in all content area subjects. It is also a special opportunity to share and talk about our cultures, interests and make a friendly connection within our school community.

ESL: Mrs. Hammond (20min)

·  Welcome – Introduce Staff.

·  ESL Department speaker? (5-8min).

·  ESL Curriculum: 1st Semester EDGE, 2nd Semester Adapted Interactive Readers and supplemental books.

·  Grading: 30% vs 70%

·  2 Book Presentations: 1st week of October and March 2013– An opportunity to “show off” their language capability in front of parents, teachers, principal, etc.

·  Can Do Descriptors by student.

·  Access Test – February 2013 and English Language Proficiency Certificate.

·  Students’ responsibility, homework, materials, discipline.

·  Technology: laptop cart, Rosetta Stone, Discovery Education.

·  Support from home: “Top 10 Things parents can do at home to help their children be successful in school.”

·  Parents’ conferences, tutoring.

·  Parent Notification letters.

·  Cultural connection.
