Assembly Content

There are loads of charities operating within the UK and internationally. Which charities spring to mind if I ask you to think about them?

Why is Age UK different?

We are the only UK charity operating nationally and internationally to address the needs of older people. We are also a charity that will definitely be relevant to you regardless of illness, disaster or misfortune.

·  You will get old

·  You will know older people (If not your grandparents, then someday your parents, then someday you and your peers)

·  You will be affected by ageing (Society is changing so that the population over 75 in the UK is expected to double in the next 30 years – so more people are living for longer)

When you think about getting older, or your grandparents or parents getting older, are your thoughts positive or negative? And what are the reasons for this? [Discussion]

What concerns do you think you may have if you were 75?

[Ideas for Discussion.

Home – How stay at home if need help? Are you your partner’s carer? Are you mobile?

Health – Are you well? If not, how may this impair your quality of life?

Isolation – How often do you see friends / family? What if they live far away? How do you stay in touch? How often can you get out and about if you are immobile?

Money – If you are retired where does your money come from?

International – What other issues may you face if you are an older abroad? If you are in a country dealing with war, famine, poverty, natural disaster?]

If you were an older person, how would these concerns make you feel?

How would you rather feel?

Can we help?

If the role of Age UK is to help older people, how do they do this?

·  Provide information and advice eg. Can I get help to look after my husband as we are both over 60?

·  Provide products eg Stairlifts to help older people who can’t get up the stairs easily to do so.

·  Provide services eg. Day Centres where older people can go to make friends and get out of the house

·  Pay for research eg. So scientists can see how to stop diseases which affect older people like Alzheimer’s Disease

·  Talk to the government to make sure that they do not forget about older people when they are making laws

·  Support older people overseas to ensure that they are supported too and are not forgotten when humanitarian aid is allocated

Age UK provides a vast array of products, services and information to help support older people.

To do all this work, Age UK needs money. You can help Age UK make more money, to help more older people.

How can you help?

·  Give some unwanted clothes or toys to your local Age UK shop.

·  Raise some money.

How can you raise money?

Anyway you like!

·  Sell things – cake sale, jumble sale, any kind of sale!

·  Be sponsored – sponsored silence, sponsored walk, sponsored run – You can be sponsored to do absolutely anything!

·  Put on an event – a party, a talent show, a fete, a concert – then charge people to come!

[Prompt a discussion on any other ideas the pupils may have of ways they would enjoy that may raise money]
