Ombudsman Services is a successful and growing private not-for-distributable--profit company, providing dispute resolution for consumers and businesses. We have been operating for over 10 years; in this time we have expanded from our initial bases in energy and telecommunications across private sector consumer activities. Our goal is to ensure that such services are available for all sales and service contracts between business and consumer, as an effective part of the civil justice system. The service is free to use for consumers being funded by member companies through subscription and case fees.

Ombudsman Services has begun new chapter with a EU directive that comes into effect in 2015. The directive on alternative dispute resolution for consumer disputes requires all EU member states to offer independent redress for most consumer transactions.

Against this background we are expanding our Ombudsman team.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Ombudsman, our Ombudsman team set demanding standards within a high-performance environment and support the development of a complaint based research and knowledge management strategy. Additionally, our Ombudsman team raise awareness of the organisation and its objectives, with the aim of making Ombudsman Services the ‘go to’ source for dispute resolution in the UK.

As the successful incumbent you will be able to demonstrate a high level of competency and experience of complex complaint investigations and dispute resolution, ideally, gained in a consumer/business environment. You must also possess the ability to approach problems analytically, logically and pragmatically, identifying sound solutions and offering guidance.

Clearly, the ADR Directive represents a tremendous opportunity for Ombudsman Services to increase its scope and as such we are looking to make two appointments at this time. For one of the appointments, a background in Consumer Law is paramount.

This is a challenging, but exciting, opportunity to join a company that is growing in both size and influence and at a time of great opportunity to shape the ombudsman role for the future.

Applicants interested in part time arrangements will be considered.
