Afterbay Campground Host
Opportunity Description:
We are looking for campground hosts, can be single host or a couple, that is willing to host campers in the Afterbay Campground at least 32 hours a week as part of the Bighorn Canyon Team. Hosts must be friendly and enjoy working with people. It will be the responsibility of the host to ensure campers have a safe and enjoyable stay in the campground.
Duties:
This position serves as the Campground Host for two small to medium size campgrounds with primarily weekend use. Duties include providing information to park visitors, performing fee compliance checks, and explaining campground rules and regulations (such as food storage, pet policy, quiet hours, etc.). This position provides information to visitors about Bighorn Canyon, the National Park Service, park interpretive programs, the natural and cultural resources, and other attractions in the region. The host checks to ensure that restrooms and other campground facilities are clean and notifies maintenance personnel and supervisor of campground needs. The host may need to effectively and diplomatically handle minor problems in the campground and will immediately notify rangers about law enforcement incidents. The hosts will be provided a park radio for communications.
Other Possible Activities:
The hosts may be asked to complete minor campground maintenance projects that could include: repairing picnic tables, painting sign posts, cleaning fire grates, etc.
Skills:
Hosts need to be friendly and be able to keep a daily log for park volunteer records.
Housing:
Hosts will provide their own trailer or motor home, a personal vehicle that can run separately from the recreation vehicle / trailer is most convenient. Electrical and water hookups are provided. A sewage dump is available near the campground, but not at the campground host site so a portable holding tank is required.
Park Provides:
The park supplies all volunteers with a uniform volunteer shirt and hat, job supplies, orientation, training, a vehicle for travelling between campgrounds and supervision.
Location Description:
Bighorn Canyon cuts across the north end of the Bighorn Mountains for 50 miles with walls towering up to 2,000 feet about 71-mile long Bighorn Lake. The mouth of the canyon opens into prairie grassland at Fort Smith. The Afterbay Campground is located on the north end of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area near Fort Smith, Montana. The campground host site is located in the tree lined South Afterbay Campground on the Afterbay reservoir between the 525 foot Yellowtail Dam and the Afterbay Dam. The Afterbay reservoir is a fluctuating body of water behind the reregulation of the Afterbay Dam which sends a fairly constant amount of cold, clean water downstream. This outlet begins the superb, world class trout fishery in the Bighorn River. The Ok-A-Beh Marina and boat ramp on Bighorn Lake is ten miles from Fort Smith and offers good walleye, small mouth bass, and ling fishing as well as spectacular canyon scenery. Temperatures in the summer range from highs in the 80s and 90s with a few days in the hundreds, to lows in the 50s and 60s. Yearly precipitation is 15 to 18 inches. The small community of Fort Smith has a convenience store, gas station, two restaurants, a coffee shop, some outfitting services with accommodations, and a post office. Hardin, 42 miles to the north has a hospital and all other necessary services. Billings, which has a population of approximately 100,000 people, is 90 miles from Fort Smith.
There is no cell or wireless internet reception at Fort Smith. The closest reception is in Hardin.
