Guidelines for Use

The goal for students when using the Rapid Reads is to read approximately one word per second. So, for example, if you time a student for 30 seconds the goal is that the would read 30 words; if you time a student for one minute the goal is that they would read 60 words. Often teachers will work with students for 30 seconds each as this requires less time when you have a lot of students to work with.

However, accuracy of word reading is the most critical skill! Therefore, be sure that students are reading the words accurately before you begin to work with them on fluency. Once accurate, you can then time the student to get a baseline score and then set gradual goals. For example, if a student is reading all words accurately but only reading 15 words in 30 seconds, you would want to gradually increase his/her goal so that it is not too overwhelming, working toward the goal of 30 words in 30 seconds (or ultimately, one word per second).
