The Opportunity:

WSDOT is currently looking for enthusiastic engineers who have a passion for creative and innovative solutions for the state-highway transportation system.

We are looking for an entry-level or mid-level engineer who wants to dive into all elements of traffic analysis, design, and operations. The successful candidate will utilize traffic modeling applications such as VISSIM and Synchro to develop concepts and review models developed by our partners. These tools help define the concept of a project, and your investigations influence the direction of important decisions such as the type of intersection control (roundabout or traffic signal) or the type/layout of interchanges.

This position includes challenging design work for signals, illumination, signing, pavement markings, low cost enhancements, and electrical design for the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSMO). The ITS system includes items such as ramp meters, cameras, and active traffic management.

Note:This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Engineer 1 or 2 level. The salary levels for each are:

Transportation Engineer 1: $50,292 – 67,584Annually

Transportation Engineer 2: $55,476 – 74,604 Annually

This position will perform the following work:

  • Prepare, review and analyze data, including summarizing collision data.
  • Conduct field assessments and recommend safety improvements.
  • Prepare project definitions and project summaries.
  • Provide scoping level documentation, schedule, and estimates for signal, illumination, work zone and signing plans.
  • Perform studies that include collecting horizontal curve data, no pass inventory, sign inventories, speed studies, and roadway delineation.
  • Serve as a designer performing a variety of skilled project development work.
  • Effectively utilize design software to complete designs.
  • Maintain various databases to track inventory and data necessary to evaluate current conditions and conduct field assessments.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding traffic operational performance and work with WSDOT Communications for traffic impact outreach.
  • Communicate proficiently, both orally and in writing, and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the public, contractors, supervisors, local agencies and other department staff.
  • Develop practical solutions to complex issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Two years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3or equivalent experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or transportation engineering is preferred.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is preferred.
  • Experience with the Highway Safety Manual is preferred.
  • Excellent computer and software skills, including the ability to use CAD and other design software.
  • Ability to create accurate plans, specifications and estimates.
  • The ability to apply appropriate judgment in selecting and adapting to new techniques and technology to solve problems.
  • The ability to present highly technical concepts to your peers.
  • The ability to read, interpret, and implement department policies, principles, standards, specifications and practices.
  • The ability to traverse uneven terrain for field site assessments and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to obtain flagger certification and perform traffic control.
  • Valid driver's license.

Note:

This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee’s initial 30 days in this classification.
