South Korea vs. North Korea

Use the readings to complete the charts and answer the questions on the following page.

South Korea

South Korea is officially known as the Republic of Korea. Its largest and capital city is Seoul. It is a democratic nation and its constitution guarantees basic rights and freedoms.

South Korea is a capitalist country. It has many privately owned businesses and industries. The leading manufactured products include chemicals, machinery, textiles, and processed foods.

South Korea has nearly 2 million farms that average 2 acres in size. The farmers own their own farms and produce rice, barley, beans, potatoes, and wheat. Some farmers are part-time fishermen.

In recent years, South Korea has become a very successful country. Its educational system is considered one of the best in the world. South Korea’s economy is becoming increasingly sophisticated and its people enjoy a high standard of living.

North Korea

North Korea is officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Its largest and capital city is Pyongyang. North Korea is a communist dictatorship led by the Korean Workers’ Party. This party makes all of the laws and chooses all candidates for elections. Human rights, such as freedom of speech and religion are limited by the government.

Most businesses and industries in North Korea are owned by the government. Leading manufactured products include chemicals, steel, machinery, processed foods, and textiles.

North Korea has thousands of government-owned collective farms. Most of these farms are large with about 300 families living and working on a single farm. Crops produced include rice, barley, corn, millet, and wheat.

In recent years, North Korea has become increasingly isolated and its people are suffering. Food shortages have become common. North Korea has also been giving other countries reasons to be concerned. It has developed nuclear weapons and has been clashing with South Korea.
