Approval of Agenda – The agenda was approved

Approval of Minutes from 2009Fall Meeting in Philadelphia: Minutes were approved as written- see attached.

Membership and Treasurer’s Report – Lars Reimann reported that TCJJP for the year 2009had revenues of $2,461 and expenses of $1,068. Our reserves as of 12/31/09 were $17.056. Lars also mentioned he files the required annual income tax report for the committee.

Treasurer’s report was approved

Elections –Reimann reminded everyone to return the ballot for the two open positions on TCJJP’s Board of Directors.

Cunningham reported that at the last Exec Committee meeting the decision was made to have the Chair and Vice Chair’s positions extended the full two years as allowed in the Bylaws with elections for these two positions to take place in 2011. He stressed that anyone with an interest in furthering the Committtee’s work should contact him for inclusion on the 2011 ballot.

PRESENTATIONS:

AntoinettaGledhill, Waters–Gave a very enlightening presentation updating attendees on new and updated technologies of potential interest to the Juice Industry.

David Cunningham, Ocean Spray –Outlined on behalf of Shannon Cole the background and preliminary results for GMA’sacai project. It was agreed that the preliminary data obtained were in line with reported values and that none of the parameters examined so far were sufficiently unique to serve as indicator for the presence of acai. GMA is currently trying to get additional samples of authentic acai. It was noted that the Brix value was a poor indicator of solids in acai juice (bulk of solids fat and insoluble fiber) and that the citric acid content often was high as result of addition of lemon juice to the puree.

Dana Krueger, Krueger Labs –provided an update of the status of AJIN’s task force for writing the “Cranberry” chapter for AJIN’s Code of Practice. Krueger is Chair of the task force and invited feedback as to the value “spread” seen for authentic cranberry juice. He hopes to have draft completed by the end of 2010.

Krueger also reported that the Pomegranate Chapter was in its final stages.

Don Sporn, IFU () – addressed IFU’s interest in forging closer cooperation with TCJJP. IFU (International Federation of Fruit Juice Producers) is primarily an association of associations but has also individual members (fruit juice producers) as well as associate members (e.g., laboratories and traders). The HQ is in Paris, the 2010. In addition to an annual meeting, IFU holds a world congress every other year and the next one will be held this May in Istanbul. During the meeting in Istanbul, the IFU executive committee will be making a final decision on whether or not to hold the 2011 annual meeting in Boston. They are a NGO representing juice interests on a worldwide basis. Activities include the development of “best practices’, standardization of methods and venue for dealing with trade matters. The Analytical Commission (Dana Krueger and David Hammond among the members) reviews and validates methods and IFU publishes the IFU Handbook of Analytical Methods that has surpassed AOAC as the Industry standard.

It was agreed that Don would seek suggestions from the IFU board for ways to form formal liaison contacts between the two organizations (e.g., standing board members) or other means of facilitation information exchange between the two organizations.

STUDIES AND FUTURE PROJECTS:

Fruit Juice Testing Workshop - Prabhakar Kasturiupdated the group on the plans for a fruit juice testing workshop associated with the 2011 Fall meeting. Discussion followed as to timing and venue with suggestions including Pittcon and Boston in connection with the IFU meeting. Suggested potential sponsors included Bruker and Waters.Current concept is a 2 day workshop addressing “high end” testing. A survey will soon be sent out to determine specific subjects of interest. The sub-committee addressing this issue consists of Prabhakar Kasturi, David Cunningham, Greg Joseph and David Hammond.

It was noted that UC Davis is sponsoring a Juice workshop within the next 3 weeks as well.

Methanol in Juices - David Cunninghamexplained that California is considering adding methanol to its Prop 65 listing. The proposed levels could be as low as those commonly found in juices. Methanol is one of the by-products from pectinase treatment of juices. GMA and JPA are working together to address the issue. One of the approaches involves a literature review to determine what data already exists in the literature on methanol content in juice products before asking companies to consider contributing data or begin testing products to generate data, which can be used to present the industry’s case that juices have naturally occurring levels that would exempt them from the California regulations.

Pomegranate Update - Dana Kruegerreported that most of the commercially available concentrates he had reviewed consisted predominantly of pomegranate with small issues involving color additions (Eastern Europe and Russia) and citric acid addition (China).

Most minor brands of juices in retail are diluted. FDA has determined that all health claims related to pomegranate juice and similar super fruit juices represent misbranding and has issued a warning letter to PomWonderful to that effect.

California legislation initiative to codify pomegranate compositional data into Californian law is still on “hold”.

Citrus Industry Update – Kristin Gunterreviewed the status of the citrus industry including expected yields from the 2009-2010 harvest.

Citrus Greening – Paul Cancalon gave an update of the status of research around the citrus greening problem. The composition of juice producedfrom infected trees is essentially the same as juice from healthy trees. There are still no good method for determining the degree of infection in treesand no method for culturing the bacteria causing the disease. The infection cycle is long (several years) and the same tree can carry symptomatic fruit (smaller, take longer to mature) and asymptomatic fruit.

NEXT MEETING:

  • Next meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday, September 30, 2010 on Orlando in connection with the Annual AOAC Meeting

The consensus of the participants was to adjourn the meeting, with a reminder that the group would be reconvening after lunch at Kerry Ingredients and Flavours in Plant City for a meeting with Steve Phelps, Technical Manager, for a presentation and tour of their freeze drying facility.

Respectfully submitted,

Lars Reimann

Committee Secretary
