Items 5, 6, and 7 were discussed together. Miles asked if the committee was in the process of updating the curriculum handbook. Jon Satko is working on the handbook. Jon said from time to time Division Chairs will email him that he needs to add Curricunet to the handbook. He is currently the only person working on the handbook but he will provide a draft to the committee.
Miles suggested that we include policies in the handbook as guidelines. Jon asked for clarification. Miles said to include support for units of courses in the handbook. By providing guidelines it doesn’t make it about the person.
Miles asked if any of the divisions have met to discuss units and prerequisites.
James Thompson said Fine Arts thought that course units should be the same as CSU and UC equivalent courses. Music P117 is currently 2 units. David Hensley said that the equivalent is usually 1 unit. He is willing to change the course to 1 unit. No other course currently being offered that would be out of compliance.
Fine Arts believed in more firm prerequisites. But it should be institution wide. Their idea was that all courses listed on the CSU and IGETC check off list should be required to have a prerequisite of one level below transfer level or instructor sign-off.
James said that he looked at our GE requirement which is 35-39 units. Students are selecting from 12 different areas. Other community colleges have from 4 to 9 areas.
Ann Marie Wagstaff said prerequisites were discussed at the Division Chair meeting. Hard prerequisites need to be well thought out. About 10% of students place in ENGL P101A. The pass rate for ENGL P050 is about 60%. Financial Aid can also be impacted if they cannot get into enough classes. Should include enrollment management in discussions regarding prerequisites.
Karen Bishop said the Social Science division changed most courses to recommended level 1 instead of level 2. Implementing hard prerequisite will have a huge impact on some departments.A possible idea was to cycle prerequisites in each semester. Then it would not be so overwhelming for any program. Administrative support would be needed so that programs would not be eliminated due to low enrollment.
Further discussion needed and the items will be included in the next agenda.
