Deputy Counsel
The University of Iowa
The University of Iowa, a research-intensive public institution of higher education located in Iowa City, Iowa, is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy Counsel in the University’s Office of General Counsel. The Deputy Counsel reports to the Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Provide legal advice to the University on a potentially broad variety of subject matter areas, including general business and regulatory compliance issues.
Qualifications - Required
- A Juris Doctor or equivalent degree in law from an accredited law school
- Current license to practice law in the State of Iowa or licensed in another jurisdiction with the expectation of becoming licensed in Iowa within one year
- Considerable (5 years minimum) experience in a university, government agency, or sophisticated law firm setting working with complex legal issues, including technical contract drafting and negotiation and regulatory compliance
- Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment
- Clear and concise written and verbal communication (professional writing sample will be expected as part of the hiring process)
- Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize among multiple projects and initiatives involving diverse constituencies, both internal and external to the University of Iowa
- Flexibility and willingness to learn new areas of law
Experience– Desired
- Intellectual property, contracts, and administrative law
- Research compliance (the successful candidate will have the opportunity to advise clients on human subjects research; animal research; rDNA, stem cell, and select agent research; biosafety; financial conflicts of interest; research misconduct; export controls; unmanned aerial systems; research grants and contracts; and economic development)
- Technology transfer and licensing
- Policy and procedure drafting and review
- Preparation of training materials and comfort presenting materials to small or large groups with varying levels of knowledge of the subject matter
