Commissioner Costello Kicks Off Educational Awareness Campaign
Oklahoma Department of Labor Helps Fight Growing Number of Unlicensed Locksmiths
Oklahoma City, 11/27/2013: Labor Commissioner Mark Costello announced today the Oklahoma Department of Labor is taking a series of steps designed to protect Oklahomans when they hire an alarm installer or locksmith. The Labor Department regulates and licenses the alarm & locksmith industry. They have discovered a growing number of unlicensed locksmith and unlicensed businesses providing services in Oklahoma while located in other states.
Enforcement and educational steps have been taken; they include sting operations, compliant investigations and on-site educational consulting. Short Public Service Announcements (PSA) have been created to warn the consumer and to make them aware that the Alarm & Locksmith Industry is regulated and that those that offer these services must be licensed in Oklahoma.
Costello said, “Consumers of Oklahoma have the right to expect that alarm installers and locksmiths have passed a criminal background check and are licensed. Consumer safety under the laws of the State of Oklahoma is the objective of the Alarm and Locksmith Unit.”
“We need to ensure that the locksmiths who have access to our homes and businesses are professional and trustworthy” stated Commissioner Costello. “We depend on these individuals to provide a sense of security and a safe environment for our families. An unlicensed locksmith places the public at risk.”
The Oklahoma Department of Labor advises that anytime a consumer calls for a locksmith or has an alarm system installed, they should ask to see their license. If you have questions or concerns, call 1-888-269-5353 and ask for the Alarm & Lock unit.
