What to Bring: Bouldering Rocktown; Lafayette, GA

  1. Equipment
  2. Duffel bag – to manage your personal gear. No Large Suitcases Please!
  3. Sleeping Bag & Ground Pad - The sleeping bag should be medium weight, rated to 20 F°. No Blow up Mattresses Please.
  4. Eating Utensils*- Bowl, mug, spoon, pocket knife. Remember to think light and durable. Some kind of lightweight plastic bowl works best (small Tupperware with lid is ideal), with an insulated plastic mug. *#1 forgotten items on trips
  5. Day Pack - It should be large enough to carry your food, clothing, and water on day hikes.
  6. Whistle - Just in case you get lost. MANDATORY!!
  7. (2) One Quart Water Bottles - Plastic Gatorade bottles work fine. Nalgene bottles are the best. Another great option is a hydration system.
  8. Clothing (the layered look):SYNTHETICS ARE BEST, STAY AWAY FROM COTTON IF POSSIBLE
Cotton is a comfortable fabric of which many of our clothes are made. However when cotton gets wet it is slow to dry and causes us to lose body heat. If you go in the water, and a breeze starts to blow, you could wind up a little chilly. For clothing, try synthetic fabrics (like the stuff running shorts are made of); synthetic materials are highly recommended because they dry quickly and keep you warm when you are wet. Also, make sure your clothes are comfortable as you will be moving around in them a lot.

Bring all the clothing listed below and MORE. If you are unsure about whether or not to bring something, bring it. We can always leave it in the van. Remember, the temperature can down low at night, so be prepared!!

  • Inner Layer
  • Underwear - As much as you think you will need. Cotton is suggested for women.
  • Long Underwear - You will need a pair of tops and bottoms made of a synthetic material such as polypropylene. If you don't have long underwear, a sweatshirt and a pair of sweat pants also works.
  • T-Shirts - Two or three is plenty.
  • Insulating Layer
  • Socks - Two pairs made of wool or a synthetic material. No cotton please. Thick inexpensive wool socks will do.
  • Shorts - For hiking/swimming.
  • (2) Pull-Over/Jacket - Bring two items. Wool or fleece is ideal. An old wool sweater works great, but two cotton sweatshirts will work fine as one item. If you bring a jacket, bring one that is down or fiber-filled, a ski type jacket.
  • Gloves - Something warm.
  • Down or synthetic insulated jacket – It’s going to be cold in December! Make sure you have a nice jacket that will keep you warm.
  • Hat - Something warm in wool or fleece.
  • Protective Layer
  • Hiking Boots/Sturdy Walking Shoes – Boots are not absolutely necessary. If you are buying a new pair, make sure that they are adequately worn in before the trip.
  • Camp Shoes – Sandals w/ heel strap are ideal! An old pair of tennis shoes works fine. Flip-flops work but don’t provide as much support.
  • Pants –One pair, synthetic preferable. Zip-off legs are a great option and convert into shorts. Make sure they’re big enough to wear over your long underwear bottoms
  • Rain Jacket and Pants or a Poncho - MANDATORY!
  • Sun Hat
  • Bandanas - These are optional, but serve many purposes. For example, they are great as hankies for blowing a runny nose, as washcloths, or for wetting down and putting on your head!
  1. Personal Items
  2. Flashlight - Headlight and extra batteries.
  3. Personal Medication - Please notify the guides about all prescription medication, or any possible medical concerns. Zip-lock baggies are great for waterproofing.
  4. Personal Toiletries
  5. Camera - If your camera is not waterproof, take extra precaution to keep it stored in a waterproof system (such as multiple zip-lock baggies).
  6. Blister Kit - If you are prone to blisters please bring mole-skin (not mole foam). Can be purchased at any grocery store.
  7. Sunscreen
  8. Sunglasses with Strap
  9. Lip Balm- Minimum SPF 15
  10. (1) Huge Plastic Trash Bag(heavy duty lawn bags) – For waterproofing. Feel free to bring extra because they are light and multi-purpose.
  11. Journal, Book, and Pen – Optional.
  12. Money - You will need $$$ for road stops.
