General Objectives

The purpose of this component is to introduce new subject matter while placing a strong emphasis on practical teaching skills that participants can take back to their Calculus AB & BC programs. This College Board Advanced Placement Institute is designed for teachers who have already had introductory AP training and have taught advanced placement for at least one year.

Specific Objectives

Upon completion of this component, participants will be able to implement a program to teach the following concepts:

1.  Functions, Graphs, and Limits - analysis of graphs, limits of functions (including one-sided limits), asymptotic and unbounded behavior, continuity as a property of functions, parametric, polar, and vector functions.

2.  Derivatives - concept of the derivative, derivative at a point, derivative as a function, second derivatives, applications of derivatives, computation of derivatives.

3.  Integrals - Riemann sums, interpretations and properties of definite integrals, fundamental theorem of calculus, techniques of antidifferentiation, applications of antidifferentiation, and numerical approximations to definite integrals.

4.  Polynomial Approximations and Series - concept of series, series of constants, Taylor series.

5.  Other objectives set by the College Board endorsed Advanced Placement Program Institutes.

Description of Activities

Activities conducted under this component will be designed by the College Board to provide rigorous content training in order to accomplish the specific objectives outlined above. They will include, but not be limited to, such things as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, problem solving sessions, technology integration, and question-and-answer time. The consultant(s) will use appropriate instructional technology and materials in order to teach the content most effectively. Whenever possible, training materials for this component will be provided for the participants.

Evaluation of Participants

It will be assumed that an individual who returns from an Advanced Placement Institute with an appropriate certificate of completion or other documentation of completion will have successfully met the objectives of the component.

Evaluation of Activity

An online evaluation for this activity will be conducted through the Santa Rosa Professional Growth System.
