COURSE REQUIREMENTS: This course is intended for students with intermediate listening, reading, speaking and writing skills in Spanish. A student who hasmastered Spanish 1010,1020, 2040 and 2050 or their equivalent should be prepared to perform the tasks assigned throughout this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVE AND EXPECTED OUTCOME:At the end of this course the successful student will be able to clearly and concisely express his or her opinion regarding a wide variety of topics using Spanish. To that end, all assignments and class activities will provide the students ample opportunities to communicate orally and in writing. The topics around which class conversations and debates will occur are often controversial.Their aim is to encourage conversation, discussion and debate.

COURSE GOALS:

  • Improvedfluency andconversational skills
  • Increased range, recall anduse of vocabulary/idiomatic expressions introduced in textbook
  • Improved grammar usagein oral and written communication

NOTE: Although no new grammar will be introduced throughout this course, theassigned exercises recycle and review previously learned concepts. Thetopical vocabulary included in each reading passage, the Vocabulario lists and the Ejercicios de vocabulariomust be mastered and will be tested. During all class assignments, oral or written, the student must usethe vocabulary pertinent to each chapter. All class activities are aimed at increasing the student’s proper use of the topical vocabulary and reinforcing good grammar.

THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO:

  • Dedicate2 hours in order to thoroughly prepare for each class.
  • Prepare well before attending each class. Read each passage and assigned pages carefully. Highlight the essential information and new data. Take note of the new vocabulary.
  • Preparation will require students to: 1)Read the assigned 2-6 pages, 2) Study and use the vocabulary and idiomatic expressions contained in these readings, 3) Review previously learned grammatical concepts, 4) Do the assigned vocabulary and grammar exercises 5) Prepare sufficiently in order to express his/her opinion regarding the assigned topic and participate in conversations/discussions and debates with his/her classmates.Reading the assigned pages with a critical eye will help you improve your speaking and writing skills.
  • Participate during each activity (paired/small group/ large group conversations/discussions/debates)
  • Write well organized and carefully crafted paragraphs and compositions.
  • Be punctual and considerate of the various opinions expressed.

GRADES ARE NOT CURVED. NO EXTRA CREDIT. ONLY ONE QUIZ GRADE WILL BE DROPPED.

SPANISH IS THE LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION AND INTERACTION DURING CLASS.

ABOUT INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPATION:

  • Your oralperformance will be noted during each class
  • Every 2 weeks the quality of your contribution will be assessed
  • It is essential that you prepare carefully prior to each class
  • It ispainfully evident if and when a student is not well prepared
  • You will be working in pairs, in groups of 4 or 5
  • During debates you will address the entire class
  • Attending class does is not the same asparticipating during class activities
  • Be respectful of the opinions expressed
  • Stay on topic
  • Ask questions
  • Interact frequently with your classmates
  • Practice rephrasing/paraphrasing what has been said in you discussion groups
  • Learn to direct / redirect the conversation if and when needed
  • The grading rubricsthat will be used throughout the semester to assess all oral assignments will be provided on BLACKBOARD

ABOUTQUIZZES: There will be 5brief (5-15 minutes) but unannounced quizzes. These will occurat the beginning of class and will be based on the assigned homework. The questions may be simple reading checks, ask you to providea synonyms/antonym to vocabulary words, matching the definition to the vocabulary word, fill in the blanks, identify, short answers.)There is no make-up for missed quizzes.

ABOUTWRITTEN HOMEWORK AND ALL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS:

You will begin by writing paragraphs and progress tocompose longer essays. You will writeseveral essays, including the final.

ABOUT JOURNALS

  • 1 entry is required for each chapter covered
  • Each entry must be well organized
  • Be no less than ½ page double spaced
  • student may comment/react to “lo que dice la gente de la calle” and/or express his/herown opinion on each topic but must adopt one of the 2 positions discussed in the readings. (estoy a favor de / estoy en contra ….etc.)
  • they must also use vocabulary & expressions introduced in the textbook

THESE READING JOURNALS WILL BE COLLECTED TWICE DURING THE SEMESTER.

NO LATE SUBMISSION WILL BE ACCEPTED.

REQUIREMENTSFOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS & GUIDELINES:

  • Essays that will be written in the laboratory during class time. Students will be allowed 90 minutes to complete the 1 and ½ page essays.
  • See the grading rubric on Blackboard and /or refer to the handout provided to each student during the first week of class.

The following components of the essays will be assessed.

Each of the following 5 components is worth 10 points for a total of 50 points.

Content value

Presentation, Organization and Cohesion, of the Essay

Syntactic level (sentences construction)

Morphology & orthography (accents & spelling)

Use of the topical vocabulary is required. These words/phrases must be

identified clearly (underline, italicize, bold, highlight, etc)

  • Use standard margins, work must be typed and be double spaced
  • required font is ARIAL, size 12
  • topics will be announced in a timely manner during class
  • the only tool allowed during the assignments done in the language laboratory is the dictionary from the RAE (available online) this tool also provides conjugation
  • work turned-in must be your own (see Outside Help/Academic Integrity)

ABOUTCONVERSATIONS/DEBATES: These are organized discussion where each participant (usually in a group of 5) will speak for a minimum of 5 minute and presents a specific viewpoint on the selected topic. There should be a secretary who will gather the information and points of view presented. The secretary will present a summary of the key points expressed by the group members at the end of the session. There should also be a director. The director’s role is to direct the conversation, to stimulate discussion, ask questions in order to promote reactions from the group and redirect the debate when needed. Students who do not participate will earn a 0. Every student will need to fulfill the role of director and secretary two or three times during the semester.

ABOUTTHE FINAL ESSAY: You will write a 2 page essay on a topic studied and discussed during the semester. The instructor will choose this topic.

Punctual class attendance is expected. 2 absences are allowed without incurring a penalty. EACH absence after the 2 allowed without penalty will incur a 1 point deduction from the final semester grade. When you are absent, you are responsible for catching up on you own.

  • There is no excuse for not being prepared for class.
