Advanced Placement English Literature, 2017-2018

Course Description / •AP Literature and Composition will focus on close reading and literary analysis. Students will be prepared to take the AP exam at the end of the year for college credit. Participation in the final exam is not a requirement of this class.
•AP Literature and Composition is a college level course in terms of reading, work load, and complexity of writing that will be required. This class will go at a slower pace than most college classes and students will be given more scaffolding to aid them in their work. Students, however, should be ready and willing to work at a higher level than previous English classes.

Course Objectives / In AP English Literature and Composition, students are expected to read and respond to prose, poetry, and plays based on an understanding of diction, sentence patterns, organization of details and literary elements. Citing evidence from the text, students will be able to write interpretively, persuasively or argumentatively, as the prompt dictates, addressing the structure, style and themes in explaining why specific details are important, describing the feeling created or explaining how a character’s or narrator’s attitude or philosophy is developed. Additionally, students will consider the historical and biographical contexts surrounding the literary compositions to interpret the significance of context in relationship to interpretation.
