ICs– have been allocated another Instructor to act as mentor/facilitator/critiquer. However all Instructors will be paired with different faculty members for the skill stations, workshops and simulations for variety! IC’s have not been allocated a lecture on this course to allow the opportunity for observing lectures and preparation for skill stations they will be assessed on.
To maintain confidentiality please remember to keep your programs safe if you make comments about the candidates or complete the result sheet.
CASTeach Rotation for the groups:When running the CASTeach sessions the rotation below is to be followed. This is in order to ensure all candidates experience each team member role. Over the six scenarios each day the candidates will each be team leader.

Identifying ALS Instructor Potential
In order to be successfully put forward for ALS Instructor Potential (IP), the candidate must score a minimum total of 25, ILS IP must score a minimum of17. Any score of unacceptable excludes the candidate from being selected. Clinical skills should be noted during the performance of the candidate in the course. A copy of each completed form should be included with the Course Director’s report to the ALS Co-ordinators at the Australian Resuscitation Council. Please note the clinical and non-technical skills are continuously assessed throughout the course and not just within the specific skill station. Scores may be improved throughout the course with exposure and practice from the initial skill station. Please read the notes for further details, then circle the appropriate number for each characteristic in the table below. Any score of zero excludes the candidate from IP.

Identifying ALS Instructor Potential
Explanation of Terms
Communication
Includes desire to learn to teach and ability to communicate. Should be appropriate and not overpowering. Convey information so that it is received and understood by all. Engaging with others and displaying ability of actively listening as well.
Interactive and Supportive
Includes being approachable and a good listener, with a positive/supportive attitude towards other participants. Able to promote understanding of core material used on the course.
Team Member
Shows awareness of the level of understanding of all candidates, especially weaker members and is able to provide a supportive role. Provides constructive support to other team members. Aids team members in decision making without taking over or dominating.
Suggestions of where to look for characteristics
(Evaluation throughout the course)
Communication Skills
Questions asked and answered during lectures, participation during discussions, skill stations, workshops and CASTeach.
Interactive and Supportive
Questions asked and answered by the candidate in relation to other participants. Questions asked and answered during lectures, participation during all discussions including skill stations, workshops and CASTeach. Support given to others at breaks, supervised practice and within sessions.
Team Member
Particularly during CASTeach, but also during skill stations, workshops and discussions.
Assessment of all clinical skills , core knowledge and other attributes (as below) that are demonstrated throughout the course contribute towards the assessment of suitability for potential Instructors:
Ratings:
Excellent – Correct decisions made promptly and with confidence. Able to appropriately expand on clinical management. An expert or instructor potential performance. Demonstrates support of other candidates by teaching, offering supportive/constructive comments and promotes and furthers understanding of core material from own knowledge. Shows an awareness of other candidates needs. Demonstrates teaching skills.
Achieved – Correct decisions made and performance demonstrated; some hesitation may be evident with decision-making or lacking confidence. Standard level of performance expected of an ALS provider. Supportive contributions/interactions with other candidates.
Borderline – Minor errors in decision making and performance, hesitant and lacking confidence in decisions, required prompting, did not perform skill but recognised error on subsequent questioning. Basic safe management demonstrated during course. However those skills and attributes often mediocre and/or inconsistently demonstrated for the level of performance expected of an ALS provider.
Not achieved– incorrect decision / treatment according to material taught and clinical knowledge, action may, or likely to cause harm; failed to demonstrate attributes required of an ALS provider. Not achieved should be used for unsatisfactory performance.
