Thank you for your interest in this very unique Advanced Coast Guard Training – Maine.
This letter will give you general information about the training, what will be required, and
the process for application:
DESCRIPTION:
Coast Guard Sector Northern New England is offering a one of a kind training opportunity for 24 Sea Cadets. This sector conducts all 11 of the Coast Guard’s missions and they have set up a training that will cover all of these missions:
HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste & Emergency Operation Response) training
Safety Training
Lifesaving equipment
Distress signaling and emergency communication
Marine Inspection & Small passenger vessel inspection
Incident management
Hazardous material response
Theory, strategies and practices for oil spill response
Maritime law enforcement
Basic seamanship and small boat operations
Aid to Navigation (ATON)
Vessel stability and damage control
USCGC SHACKLE (65’ multi-mission cutter capable of ice breaking)
Potential underway opportunities if available (day trip/missions only)
This is a great opportunity to really understand what the Coast Guard is all about.
CADET QUALIFICATIONS:
E-3 or above (completed recruit training and BMR), minimum of 14 years of age, mature (please note that form NSCTNG 017 will not apply under these circumstances since cadets will be berthing at an offsite location under the supervision of officers and instructors in the USNSCC program)
Excellent physical condition
Basic Swimmer
LOCATION OF TRAINING:
Cadets will report on 16 JUL 2017 by 1000 hours to:

If you need to report the day before, prior arrangements must be made, but it can be done. Staff cadets need to report on 15 JUL 2016 by 1600 hours.
Berthing is being provided at The American Legion Hall less than a mile from the Coast Guard base. Cadets will be on the Coast Guard base from breakfast through dinner under the direct instruction and supervision of the Coast Guard.
The evenings will be at the American Legion Hall with cadets from another training. Both groups will do activities in the evenings, including the following, but subject to change:
Tour of Fort Williams
Coast Guard Leadership Visit
Group building activities

Broadway “South Portland” Maine 04106. South Portland is easily accessed from I-95 from the south or north.
GENERAL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
Training will be held Sunday 16 Jul 2017 through Saturday 22 Jul 2017.
All hands must report by 1000 on Sunday, 16 Jul 2017 at The American Legion
Hall in South Portland Maine.
Training Starts promptly at 1200 hours on 17 Jul 2017!
Please ensure that your service jacket is up to date and includes:
NSCTNG001 & NSCTNG005 for this training
NSCADM001, Pages 3-4 Medical History updated in the past 30 days;
NSCADM001, Pages 5-6 Medical Exam Form
Updated emergency contact information (please list a contact who will be
available 17 Jul – 23 Jul 2016)
Copy of NSCC ID card and medical insurance card
If you don’t know where these things are, please show this sheet to the Admin
Officer at your unit!
Training fee will be $150 and non-refundable. Payment to “USNSCC” by bank check/money order. Include Magellan training Invoice.

Reasonable accommodations will be made, if possible.
Cadets with medical concerns may be required to submit updated NSCADM001, pages 7-8 and 9-10.
BILLETING:
Billeting will be handled through Magellan. Billets are first-come, first-served. Please mail all paperwork to the address on the top of this information packet.
STATUS OF TRAINING:
Training may be cancelled at any time, up to and including 16 Jul 2017. It is recommended that any travel arrangements made be refundable.
TRAVEL ITINERARY:
Any cadet traveling by air/train/bus must pre-coordinate travel arrangements with the COTC LTJG Shannen Williamson
If traveling by air, please purchase a refundable airline ticket in the event the training is cancelled. All air travel must arrive at the Portland International Jetport (PWM) in Portland, Maine.
Cadets who travel by other than car to the training with a parent or guardian will be required to call home as soon as they arrive.
Cadets are to arrive at or before the desired check-in time and make arrangements to leave after graduation.
Cadets MAY NOT travel in uniform on airplanes, trains or buses.
UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS:
Sea Bag List will be posted for both trainings at portlandseacadets.com
WAIVER REQUIREMENTS:
All necessary waivers will be posted at Portlandseacadets.com. Completed waivers must accompany the cadet at the time of check-in.
CONTRABAND:
Cadets may NOT bring any of the following items:
Anything that plugs into a wall socket
Anything that runs on batteries (except wristwatch) (e.g., mp3 player, iPad,
Tablet computer, electric razor, etc.)
Food, candy, gum or soda
Anything in an aerosol can (e.g., hairspray, mousse, etc.)
Perfumes or colognes
Anything in a glass container
Knives or blades of any kind (e.g. Swiss Army or Leatherman tools)
Weapons or simulated weapons (e.g., pepper spray, fake/toy guns, grenade
launchers, etc.)
Tobacco products or related paraphernalia (e.g., cigarettes, cigars, pipes,
lighters, matches, etc.)
Alcohol of any kind or any kind of pornography
Narcotic drugs or related paraphernalia
Medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, unless upon presentation
a completed NSCTNG001, Pages 7-8, 9-10.
Cadets must conform to requirements of the sea bag list. If a cadet is in possession of a prohibited item, it will be confiscated and returned at the COTC’s discretion.
All cell phones and other electronic devices used during transportation to the training will be turned it at check-in and returned at check-out, NO EXCEPTIONS.
OPTIONAL ITEMS:
Cadets may bring the following items:
One set of nice civilian clothes – HOWEVER, no tank tops, short shorts, ripped
jeans, fad or otherwise inappropriate clothes will be allowed.
No more than $50 spending money. Place money in an envelope with cadets name and turn in at check in. Money will be made available when cadets go to the Coast Guard exchange. (over and above travel money). The training staff is not responsible for any money not turned in at check in.
ID’s must be current through July 2017
GRADUATION:
Graduation will be held on Saturday 22 JUL 2017 at the Coast Guard Station at 1000 and is subject to change based on the Coast Guard’s schedule. Cadets are dismissed after clean-up.
