Advanced Certificate in CBT

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to give participants an understanding of a range of emotional disorders, their classification (DSMV), specific treatment protocols and opportunities to practice and develop the skills used to apply the theory in their own working environment.

The objectives of the course are to provide participants with:

  • Evidence based knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of CBT
  • Treatment Protocols for Depression and some Anxiety Disorders (PTSD; GAD etc.).
  • Development of skills in the CBT therapeutic relationship
  • Development of Reflective Practice and Scientist Practitioner
  • Measuring Effectiveness and Outcomes of treatment
  • Ethical and legal issues

The practical nature of the pathway should be emphasised; its aim is to develop attitudes, self-awareness and skills built on a sound theoretical knowledge base. It offers adult students an opportunity to engage in educational study on a part-time basis. This course is Level 7 and includes appropriate assessment of practical work.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Learners will need to demonstrate they have:

  • A minimum of 2 years post-qualifying experience as a psychologist, psychotherapist, counsellor, mental health nurse etc.
  • Have some basic knowledge and learning of CBT (similar to our Certificate level training).
  • Have access to a minimum of 4 clients presenting with mild to moderate depression and /or anxiety disorders.
  • Have access to completing a minimum of 20 hours of CBT practice with a minimum of 3 clients in their work setting or a voluntary setting.
  • Have access to, or can arrange for, appropriate professional supervision in CBT whilst attending the training programme.
  • Have 2-3 hours per week set aside for private study.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of theory and practice of CBT.

2. Demonstrate use of specific models of CBT Assessment, Case Formulation, Treatment protocols and outcomes for anxiety and depression.
3. Demonstrate a critical evaluation of CBT methodologies and practice.

4. Understand and demonstrate the importance of resilience building in cognitive behavioural processes.
5. Understand different approaches and evaluate knowledge of recent developments in CBT
6. Demonstrate their ability for reflective practice and developing a Scientist Practitioner approach.

7. Demonstrate their ability to make appropriate evidence based clinical decisions when working with clients experiencing depression and anxiety.

Course Structure

The course has five main areas of emphasis, which are interrelated so that sessions will often contain elements of each;

  • Philosophy and Theory
  • Professional, Ethical and Legal issues
  • CBT skills and skills development
  • Personal Development
  • Practitioner Reflection

The course includes the opportunity to attend specific CPD workshops presented by `experts’ in areas of current CBT research and practice.

The course involves 9 days of attendance and approximately 3 hours of home study per week during the life of the course.

Coursework and Assessment

Students will be required to keep a Reflective journal, complete a formative written and practical assignments, contribute to class discussion, complete homework tasks and read a selection of books and articles to develop their understanding of the subject.

Assessment method to be employed:

ESSAY

  1. A critique of CBT (3000 words).

REFLECTIVE LEARNING JOURNAL

  1. Complete during the life of the course a reflective learning journal
  2. The journal will include CASE STUDIES on their use of CBT with a minimum of 3 clients over a minimum of 20 hours of practice. This will incorporate reflections of theory, use of specific treatment protocols/principles, use of supervision etcetera.
  3. Audio or video recording of sessions undertaken with clients.
  4. Transcribe sections of the sessions for reflection in the Case Studies
  5. Feedback from peer/s and own Supervisor on some of the audio/video recordings will be encouraged.

LIVE ASSESSMENT

  1. Live assessment from peers and Tutor/s during the course.

READING LOG

  1. Complete a Reading log during the life of the course.

SUPERVISORS REPORT

A report from your external clinical supervisor will be required.

Please note Students require their own recording equipment for the audio/video recording task, and course fees do not include payment of any supervision of clinical practice.

Completion of the Award

To complete the award students must:

  1. Successfully complete all the required assignments (submission within 4 weeks of final taught module)
  2. Attend at least 80% of the course (Home study guidance provided for any module not attended).

Students will have the right to resubmit an assignment within a given time to allow for further study and practical work.

Each Learner, on successful completion of the course will receive a Certificate in CBT awarded by the Manchester Centre for CBT. The certificate will indicate that this course is recognised by BPS as an appropriate continuing professional development course.

Teaching and Learning

Learning opportunities in each session will be provided through a combination of teaching methods including:

  • Tutor presentation
  • Individual and group tasks
  • Role play
  • Student presentations
  • Peer and tutor feedback

Video presentations, handouts and reading materials will be provided to support student’s learning. Participants will be required to keep a reflective learning journal, a reflective practice journal, demonstrate their knowledge of the key texts and have access to audio or video taping resources; take their CBT practice to their own appropriate Supervisor.

Online Support Materials: Access to online support materials in the format of pdfs will be made available to students during the life of the course (until 4 weeks post the final taught module).

Supervision of Clinical CBT Practice

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have an appropriate clinical supervisor in place to which they can take their practice work (minimum 3 clients/20 practice hours). This element is not provided by the course.

We recommend students secure a Clinical Supervisor who is a BABCP Accredited CBT practitioner for this element of the course and meet for a minimum of 1.5 hours per month.

Other supervisors may have sufficient CBT theory/skills experience and be equally appropriate. However students need to consider this element in relation to their ongoing CPD.

A brief report on the students’ use of supervision/learning and development through supervision will be required from your clinical supervisor.

Additional costs

Additional costs include payment for appropriate clinical supervision (fees for a minimum of 4 sessions and may be in the region of £200-£280). We recommend learners access their own supervision (preferably a BABCP Accredited CBT therapist). You would need to check whether there are any additional fees from your clinical supervisor for completion of a report. Further costs may be incurred from any books that the learner may purchase for the course.Specific books will be recommended by the tutors at the commencement of the course.

Course Tutors

Keith Chadwick

Keith is an experienced CBT therapist and is the Director of Manchester Centre for a CBT (a private CBT treatment and training service). He is MBACP Senior Accredited Supervisor, EMDR Accredited Practitioner and HCPC Registered Social Worker. Keith is the author of CBT self-help audio books and has an interest in PTSD/Anxiety Disorders, Acquired Brain Injury andresilience building in his clinical practice.

Visiting Tutor - Dr. Styliani Gkika

I am accredited by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) since 2007, and a graduate member of the British Psychological Association (BPS). Since October 2009, I teach and supervise trainees at a postgraduate course in cognitive-behavioural therapy at the University of Bolton. Styliani has an interest in Social Anxiety Disorder and continues to research this area in CBT.
