Overview:
This course is grounded in advancing drawing, painting, and 3-D skills including observational, imaginative, and interpretative through a means of different assignments, mediums, and projects. This course is designed to teach, guide, and inspire students in creating works that address three major concerns in the study of art:
Breadth- experiences that show a solid understanding of visual principles as well as formal, technical, and expressive means of the artist
Quality- a show of growth in technique, content, and personal voice in the student’s work
Concentration- In-depth investigation and process of discovery centered on a particular and compelling visual interest or problem.
This course satisfies our school’s requirement for one credit in Fine Art that fulfills requirements for high school graduation.
Advanced Art Objectives- Students will:
- Be introduced to the rich and fulfilling creative process on a personal level
- Be interested in opening the door to personal discovery
- Feel compelled to make meaningful contributions to the greater community and culture that they are part of
- Create a 2-D Design portfolio of chosen works of art (25-30 pieces)
- Work closely with and in a sketchbook
- Contribute in various art shows
Art Portfolio Objectives:
- Address the elements of art -line, shape, color, value, form, space, and texture
- Support the elements of art through the principles of design- unity, balance, emphasis, variety, rhythm, movement, and proportion
- Include painting, drawing- abstract, observational, and inventive works
- Include a broad range of sculptural issues in depth and space as well as concepts of mass, volume, form, plane, and light
- Include articulations of additive, subtractive and fabrication processes
- May include graphic design, typography, photography, collage, illustration, mixed media, and print making

Independent artwork or work from other teachers is not a part of this class. The art room is a studio space for students to be working on projects stemmed from the curriculum in this course.
Attendance and Discipline:
I adhere to the rules as stated in the Chelsea Public School Student Handbook regarding attendance and discipline. I fully expect all students to review the material and follow it. As always, I maintain discretionary rights and will follow up on all issues and concerns.
Classroom Policies:
- Come to class prepared to learn and work and on time.
- The Art room is a safe haven for everyone who enters; adhere to this policy always.
- Respect yourself and your fellow classmates including personal belongings, artwork, and the integrity of the class.
Artistic Integrity Policy:
Students are discouraged from working from published or copyrighted photographs or images of any kind. Students are allowed to work from photographs they have taken themselves. If a student works form a published or copyrighted image, the image must be significantly altered. Significantly altered so that it does truly become the student’s personal artistic voice and in the student’s own personal style and expression.
