PROCEDURE:

PART A: THE DRAWING:

  1. Based on your interests, choose a type of sea creature you’d like to change into a Mythological Being.
  2. Bring in IMAGES and RESOURSES to help you develop a VISUAL IMAGE.
  3. On your BRISTOL BOARD, you will be DRAWING your potential Mythological Sea Creature, which will be used as the visual for your SCULPTURE.
  4. When you draw…..
  5. LIGHTLY Sketch your creature.
  6. Break it down into SIMPLE SHAPES .
  7. Draw LARGE and FILL UP the page.
  8. Once everything is planned out, create STRONGER lines. (You do not need to outline this image like in our previous project.)
  9. ALWAYS leave DETAILS LAST!
  10. Use color in the end.
  11. You have an option to use Markers, Colored Pencils and/or Watercolors on the Bristol Board. I HIGHLY recommend if you do not know how a Medium will react to the Bristol Board, please TRY IT OUT first.
  12. Please make sure your NAME, PERIOD and CREATURES TITLE is NEATLY written on the back.

PART B: THE SCULPTURE:

  1. Once you have completed your drawing, you may begin your sculpture.
  2. We will work on it starting on a DAY 5 so we have THREE days in a row to work on it.
  3. Remember, this is SELF HARDENING CLAY.
  4. At the end of EVERY class, take some DAMP (Not dripping wet) paper towels
  5. GENTLY wrap the clay to preserve moisture.
  6. Place into Zip-lock bag. (Make sure your NAME and PERIOD are on them,)
  7. Press out as much air as you can from the bag before sealing it.
  8. At the start of every class, THROW AWAY THE OLD PAPER TOWELS.
  9. On Day 7, you will take it home to work on it until we meet again on Day 5.
  10. This method of TAKING AWAY from the Medium is called SUBTRACTIVE SCULPTURE.

  1. ALWAYS hold onto any “scraps” you take off because they may be added onto later as needed.
  2. Use the tools and your hands to tear, push, mold and sculpt the clay according to your drawing.
  3. Think of the BASIC SHAPES you used in your drawing- the same will apply here, except these are now FORMS.
  4. Attempt to use ALL the clay you are given.
  5. If a friend needs more, please feel free to share.
  6. ALWAYS smooth out any cracks and gaps. Once air gets in there and it dries, the clay could crack.
  7. DO NOT just ‘stick’ on clay. Imagine you are ATTACHING a limb securely. You don’t want your limbs to fall off!
  8. CARVE DETAILS ALWAYS LAST!
  9. Use a fine edged tool or p
  10. We will paint these Gold and/or Bronzes to give it an “ancient” look.
