Internship Experience

Roles and Responsibilities

Faculty

  1. Assists in the planning, preparation, and evaluation of the internship.
  • Participates in clinical skills check-off of students
  • Meets with students in preparation for clinical internship:
  • agency expectations
  • course syllabus, clinical requirements, agency required preparation for experience
  • accountability
  • Facilitates student's orientation to clinical site
  • Conducts evaluation conference at the end of clinical internship
  1. Acts as liaison with clinical preceptors at clinical site.
  2. Serves as resource person for student and preceptor
  3. Retains responsibility for the clinical experience
  4. Works with preceptor to guide the student in attaining stated objectives
  5. Assesses student success in meeting stated goals and objectives
  6. Consults with student and preceptor as needed
  7. Is available to student and preceptor by pager during internship hours
  8. Reviews student journal and log
  9. Contacts clinical preceptor and student periodically for the purposes of monitoring and evaluating learning experiences.
  10. Completes final evaluation summary of each student with consideration of student self-evaluation and preceptor's feedback
  1. Evaluates clinical internship experiences and makes recommendations for future semesters.
  1. Provides feedback to program director concerning student experience.

Preceptor

1.Belief of Chipola College ADN Nursing Program Faculty re: preceptor role:

  • Instruction by practicing registered nurse contributes a significant dimension to the learning experience of students
  • Preceptors have depth and breadth of clinical experience that supplements and complements the nursingfaculty
  • Preceptors exemplify a high level of professional competence
  • Preceptors stimulate the student to critically examine personal practice and expand both personal and professional horizons, preparing for future employment
  1. Qualifications
  • Occupies a clinical registered nurse position and has been in this position for at least one year with clinical expertise and competence in the area where serving as a preceptor
  • Is licensed as a registered nurse in the state in which the experience takes place
  • Is willing to instruct students and facilitate their learning
  • Is willing to participate with student and faculty in evaluating student performance
  • Supports the student/mentor relationship

3. Roles

  • Is physically present and available to the student at all times while the student is performing in a nursing capacity with patients or clients
  • Serves as role model for student in providing effective, efficient nursing care
  • Coordinates orientation of student to particular unit or department
  • Follows college guidelines for student performance of supervised and unsupervised skills (See preceptor packet for instructions on medication administration and performance of nursing skills & procedures)
  • Observes and assists in the performance of simple and complex procedures adhering to agency policy:
  • Ensures that the student follows the policies/procedures established by the agency
  • Supports the concept ofthe nursing care delivery system in place on unit and helps the student understand and adapt to this method of providing nursing care
  • Assists the student in locating and performing those procedures needing additional experience or practice
  • Retains responsibility for patient care during the hours of student internship
  • Completes or provides data to faculty for completion of evaluation of student
  • Meets with student each week that clinical hours are accrued and completes Preceptor's Nursing Student Performance Assessment Tool
  • Signs student time log at the end of each clinical day
  • Requests conferences with faculty as needed
  • Seeks excellence from the student

Student

  1. Contacts assigned preceptor at clinical facility and arranges dates (per assigned preceptor’s work schedule) to perform clinical internship
  2. Requests permission from faculty advisor beforehand to work with staff member other than assigned preceptor (hours worked with non-preceptor will not count towards the total unless prior permission was given)
  3. Works directly with the assigned clinical preceptor only on the assigned unit the hours of the day and days of the week that the preceptor is scheduled (NO 11-7 shifts)
  4. Provides direct patient care under the supervision of the preceptor
  5. Locates and performs procedures in which the student needs additional experience or practice
  6. Follows policies/procedures established by the agency
  7. Supports the concept of the nursing care delivery system in place on the unit
  8. Complies with the policies of Chipola College ADN Nursing Programas outlined in the Student Handbook
  9. Meets weekly with preceptor for Preceptor's Nursing Student Performance Assessment tool
  10. Submits thecomponents of the internship folder onthe dates listed in the course calendar
  1. Evaluates clinical internship experience and makes recommendations for future experiences.
