Q: How many homeless children attend SLPS?
A: There are close to 5,000 students identified as homeless
Q: Who can complete the SIT intake form on a homeless student/ family?
A: Any school SLPS staff, preferably the school social worker.
Q: Do I have to complete a new intake, this year, for a returning SIT student?
A: Yes, an intake must be completed on any student identified as homeless, every school year.
Q: Can a student return next school year if they were homeless last year?
A: Yes, if they continue to lack fixed, adequate and regular nighttime residence
Q: If a child lives with a relative, are they still considered homeless?
A: Yes, if the relative is not their legal guardian
Q: How long can a student be homeless?
A: There is no limit on how long a student can be considered homeless
Q: Who makes that decision?
A: The homeless coordinator of each school district is responsible for declaring homelessness
Q: Where do most homeless children live?
A: Most homeless students are living doubled-up with other family members or hotel/motel
Q: What are some reasons children become homeless?
A: Some are runaways (chose to leave home) or throwaways (asked to get out)
Q: Do children living in domestic violence shelters have to provide their address?
A: No. For safety reasons, their address is not required; use a nearby address (library or grocer)
Q: Are unaccompanied youth automatically eligible for FAFSA?
A: Yes. Please be sure that they are identified while enrolled
Q: How is enrollment verified?
A: Enrollment of all SLPS students is verified through SIS. Please be sure to refer them to the SIT Office
