AboutPlaywrights' Studio, Scotland

Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland is the nation’s only arts organisation exclusively dedicated to the long-term support, development and promotion of Scotland’s playwrights. We work actively and creatively with playwrights, connecting them with audiences and organisations, for the ultimate enrichment and enjoyment of the people of Scotland and beyond.

We were founded in 2004, after a long campaign by Scotland’s playwrights, led by the playwright Tom McGrath and the Traverse Theatre. Within ten years, Playwrights’ Studio has grown from being a pilot initiative, stimulating activity and building relationships and visibility, to a small but influential national institution. We have strong support from colleagues in the cultural sector. We are in exceptional demand from playwrights, producers and a range of other potential partners. We have earned a key position within Scotland’s cultural ecology and this is recognised in the UK and internationally. We are part of a strong international network of playwright development organisations. In delivering our aims and objectives, we are neutral, accessible and connected.

Our aims are:

  • To strengthen and provide vital support and resources to Scotland’s playwrights
  • To actively promote Scotland’s playwrights, playwriting and plays
  • To facilitate critical thinking about playwriting, plays and playwrights through debate, discussion and advocacy
  • To increase the efficiency and sustainability of Playwrights’ Studio for the benefit of Scotland’s playwrights

For further information about our work from our inception in 2004 until 2010, our published annual reports are available to download from Playwrights' Studio, Scotland.

Playwrights' Studio, Scotlandcurrently receivesAnnualFundingfromCreative Scotland. From April 2015 – March 2018, we will be one of Creative Scotland’s Regularly Funded Organisations. We also receive support from Glasgow City Council. Other income is earned from fundraising, project management and commercial activities.

Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland activities include our Public Workshop Programme which givesthe public a chance to engage with some of Scotland’s top playwrights through workshops. Currently, we support a voluntary collective of writers, directors and actors who meet monthly to conduct short public workshops of scenes from brand new plays.

Writers of any level of experience can submit their work to our National Script Reading Service and receive feedback from professional theatre artists.

Our Mentoring Programme allows new writers to be supported by our established Associate Playwrights or other Mentors for a period of six months in order to develop a play. Associate Playwrights for 2014/15 are Rob Drummond and Lynda Radley. We also manage the New Playwrights’ Awards. These bursaries provide five emerging playwrights with financial support, as well as professional mentoring to further their playwriting career.

Our Professional Workshop Programme provides established playwrights with resources, such as time with actors and directors/dramaturgs, to aid in the development of their new script.

We have other resources such as a meeting/reading space, a plays library, a bookshop and we have an additional working space with desks to let, which are available to playwrights. The space is situated on the Cultural Tenants floor of the CCA, two doors down from our main office.

In addition, our monthly e-news is a valuable source of information for all writers, producers and others interested in writing for performance. It contains details of commissions, competitions, awards and other opportunities.

To find out more about these and other activities please visit our website or contact us at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow.
