Research Associate

Adam Swanson is a Research Associate for Hornby Zeller Associates, Inc., working from the firm’s South Portland, Maine office. Since joining the firm in 2013, he has assisted with quantitative and qualitative data collection for several of HZA’s endeavors.

Mr. Swanson was part of the onsite data collection team for a special study in Arkansas aimed at evaluating outcomes for children and families served by Jefferson County’s child welfare agency. In this endeavor, he completed case record reviews and conducted interviews with caseworkers, supervisors and families in an effort to ascertain perceptions of the child welfare and court systems in Jefferson County, and their abilities to meet the safety, permanency and well-being needs of those served.

Mr. Swanson conducted key informant interviews for a process evaluation of the THRIVE Juvenile Justice Project which is aimed at providing the Transition to Independence Progress (TIP) model of case management to youth in Maine. He was responsible for assessing the data gathered from administered surveys to identify themes amongst the comments of the parents and children who were surveyed.

Late in 2013, Mr. Swanson conducted data analysis as part of an evaluation of law enforcement prevention grants dedicated to increasing the enforcement of underage drinking laws in Maine. Heextracted information from a dataset of surveys and created tables and graphs that were used to present the findings of the evaluation. Mr. Swanson wrote accompanying narrativesdescribing the results of the analyses.

As part of the project team for an evaluation of Maine’s Moving Forward initiative, Mr. Swanson conducted interviews with supervisors and case managers for a program designed to ensure youth involved with mental health agencies receive training and support to gain their independence. He has provided continued support to the onsite team to ensure youth are identified, communication is maintained and ongoing interviews are conducted.

Mr. Swanson was responsible for collecting and analyzing data for an evaluation of Maine’s Substance Abuse Treatment and Education Program. He prepared presentation materials and handouts for Technical Assistance meetings which he attended.

Prior to coming to HZA, Mr. Swanson spent six years serving as a U.S. Army Food Inspection Specialist at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. In his role there, he led bi-weekly training classes of job performance and soldier skills, created and submitted daily inspection reports detailing deficiencies and observations and conducted inspections of over two hundred military food installations worldwide utilizing FDA and USDA guidelines.

Mr. Swanson earned his BS in Psychology from Mt. Washington College in Manchester, New Hampshire in 2013.

Since joining the firm in September, Mr. Swanson has assisted in qualitative data collection efforts for several endeavors.

Adam Swanson is a Research Assistant for HZA, working from the firm’s South Portland, Maine office. Since joining the firm in 2013, he has assisted with quantitative and qualitative data collection for several of HZA’s endeavors. As he has done in the past, Mr. Swanson will participate in conducting interviews with key stakeholders for the Title IV-E Waiver evaluation in Arkansas and case reviews of the various initiatives.

Mr. Swanson has also been an active participant in the evaluation of West Virginia’s IV-E Waiver intervention, conducting interviews with key stakeholders as part of the process evaluation. He will be doing the same upon implementation of Maine’s waiver.

Mr. Swanson has other familiarity with Arkansas, having participated as a member of the onsite data collection team for a special study aimed at evaluating outcomes for children and families served by Jefferson County’s child welfare agency. In this endeavor, he completed case record reviews and conducted interviews with caseworkers, supervisors and families in an effort to ascertain perceptions of the child welfare and court systems in Jefferson County, and their abilities to meet the safety, permanency and well-being needs of those served. He too assists with the case reviews of Arkansas’s child protective services cases.

He is actively involved in many of the firm’s other data collection efforts. Adam Swanson, B.S., is a Research Assistant at HZA’s South Portland office. Prior to working with HZA he developed his skills of observation and daily report writing while working as a Food Inspection Specialist in the U.S. Army at various military bases; both within the United States and overseas. While earning his degree he gained experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office, NCSS, and SPSS, which he used to conduct studies relating to non-traditional students and universal facial expressions. Since joining HZA he has assisted in a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research, from conducting interviews for Arkansas DHHS Title IV-E waivers and the Maine Prescription Monitoring Program to performing statistical analysis on Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) and National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP); locally known as Up and Running. Additionally, he works with local agencies to maintain the standards of the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) through technical assistance, training, and data entry. Adam also serves as the interim lead on the Moving Forward project, aimed at tracking the progress of homeless youth in Lewiston, Maine.
