Second Sunday of Easter

Acts 4:32-35; 1 John 5:1-6; John 20:19-31 [44B]

“The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possession was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all.”

Reading the Scriptures today we are admitted to the upper room when the Risen Lord appeared as told by St. John and perhaps to the same room when St. Luke describes the effect of the Resurrection. We are told that they were “believers” in contrast with the one we describe as the doubter. The first gathering reflected fear and hesitation, the second unrestrained joy. The former had some degree of disunity and doubt, whereas the second was filled with unity, leading to community.

Our parish experience today is touched by the presence of the Risen Lord. The fruit of that presence summons us to great unity, allowing the power, or grace, of the Risen Christ to motivate and direct our Christian lives. We remind ourselves that we speak of the Sundays of Easter, as those fifty days wherein Christ continues to reveal Himself in our parish life and community. The same power urges us to be witnesses today of Christ in the Church.

That power is grace, the God life in us, won through the Victory of Christ over death.

Live these Easter days with the simple, prayerful request: “Stay with us for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over”. HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan

Archbishop of New York

2009

Dear Friends,
With great enthusiasm, we welcome our new Archbishop Timothy Michael Dolan who was installed this week. I am sure that many of you were able to see it on TV and get an idea of what he is like. His experience as a diplomat at the Apostolic Nunciature to the United States, his role as rector of the North American College in Rome, and subsequently, his six years as the Archbishop of Milwaukee have all prepared him well for his new calling as Shepherd of the flock of New York. Before arriving in New York, Archbishop Dolan called to say that a visit here to St Joseph’s was high on his agenda. I will keep you informed.
This weekend I am away in WashingtonD.C. for the dedication of a new library and classroom wing at our Dominican Pontifical Faculty of Theology this Sunday, April 20th . While other seminaries are shrinking we are blessed with many vocations to our Dominican way of life.
Please pray for an increase in vocations to the religious life and priesthood.
Sincerely,
John P. McGuire, O.P.

“I am the lady of the Rosary; pray the rosary every day.”

(Fatima, Sept. 13th, 1917)

Pope John Paul II has called on us all to deepen our appreciation of our Christian Faith by using the Rosary as an ideal means of meditating on the life and works of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Traditionally there have been fifteen mysteries of the Rosary – five joyful, five sorrowful and five glorious. At the Holy Father’s suggestion, a new set of five ‘luminous mysteries” have been added. The Altar Rosary meets at every second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Library. Come pray the rosary together with us.
