Method:

  1. The trainer will ask one participant to read each of the 6 definitions below, then choose the best answer and explain why it is the right definition. The group can discuss if they disagree.

An example of support is…

a-Advising someone about what they should do in their life to be happier.

b-Asking questions to help someone identify how they want to solve a difficulty.

(B- best answer as it respects the knowledge/abilities of the person and focuses and bringing their strengths to the surface, instead of just sharing your own perspectives/opinions)

An example of personalized is…

a-Is school children each having 2 uniforms and 3 textbooks to use each.

b-Is school children having a choice of what classes to take in the school year.

(B– best answer as it involves personal choice/preferences, not just a focus on having a portion of something)

An example of a life plan is…

a-Is the overall direction and goals a person has for themselves in their lives and it can be divided into smaller projects that build towards this larger life goal.

b- Is what a person plans to do in their life right now.

(A best answer that shows the life plan has a long term component and is made up of smaller parts)

An example of a personalized project is…

a- Helping someone who wants to increase confidence in their abilities find a leisure activity such as playing a drum or adapted football.

b- Helping someone make their home accessible.

(A best answer as it includes a component of empowerment – confidence – and not just an activity to be done that does not change the person, like answer B)

An example of the systemic approach is…

a-Understanding a person’s characteristics, their immediate environment, their community and society can impact how they think and behave and what they may choose to do in their life.

b- Seeing how the health and education systems impact society.

(A best example of the impact of different system on a person)

An example of follow-up is…

a-Checking with a person if they were able to visit a health centre to get tested for HIV/AIDS.

b-Checking with a person to see if they were able to visit a health centre and visiting the health centre to see how welcoming/accessible it is for persons with disabilities and the staff knowledge on disability and HIV/AIDS.

(B best answer as has a complete follow-up focused on the person and their environment)
