Introduction
“Everyone has seen a hairbrush, but most people do not think about how the hair brush was designed or what questions had to be answered to prepare the product for the consumer,” says Mr. Halo as he speaks to his design team at Hair For You Company.
Mr. Halo continues, “I want to challenge you to design a hairbrush that uses all of the design techniques you know and makes use of unique materials. Our company is counting on you to do a superb job. Good Luck!”
Equipment
- GTT notebook
- Pencil
- Computer with 3D modeling program
- Sketch paper
- Samples of hair brushes for ideas
Procedure
In this activity you will design a hair brush, sketch the hair brushin orthographic views including appropriate measurements, sketch it using the 3D modeling software, and then create the appropriate working drawings.
Your team’s hairbrush design must include the following design constraints:
- Have a maximum overall length of 6 inches
- Include special design traits, such as
- A hole for hanging that is either a counterbore or countersink
- An appropriate number of bristles
- Fillets or chamfers that add to the design
- Rounded edges for safety
- Be designed to be used by a male or female consumer
In order for you to know how to create the holes, counterbore, countersink, fillets, and rounds for this project, you will follow the instructions of your teacher or complete the tutorials regarding these topics.
Follow the design process as you develop your ideas. Complete the attached hair brush Design Brief, Decision Matrix, and Design Process Solution pages as you work on your hair brush design.
Be sure to include entries in your engineering notebook for everyday that you work on this project.

Conclusion
- What was the hardest part about designing a hair brush?
- If you were given more time, what would you like to change about your hair brush design?
- When creating the working drawings of the hair brush, what was it important for you to remember?

Hair Brush Decision Matrix
- In the criteria boxes, list the criteria from your design brief.
- Under the ideas boxes, put your three ideas and your partner’s three ideas – label the sketches A, B, C, D, E, and F.
- Evaluate the design idea for all criteria, giving each a value between 1 and 4. 1 means the design does not meet the criteria; 4 means that this is the best possible solution to the problem for this specific need.
- If your criteria is a question, use 1 if the answer is no and 2 if the answer is yes.
- When you finish evaluating your sketches, add the numbers across and put your answer in the Total column.
- The design with the highest total isyour Best Solution.
