Introduction

An Engineer is a person who uses his or her knowledge of science, technology, math, and communication to solve technical design problems. Engineering changes as new technologies are developed. Many of the careers that you will be applying for after you finish school don’t exist today. As new technologies are developed, new careers are available, and a new generation of engineers is needed as well. The oldest engineering category is civil engineering. What do you think is the newest?

Procedure

In this activity you will be investigating an engineering career. The short brochure you will create should highlight the responsibilities, salary range, best location, education and future demands for this type of engineer.

  1. Brainstorm with your classmates as many types of engineers as you can while your teacher writes them on the board.
  2. From the careers listed on the board, select an engineering career that you want to learn more about. Research on the Internet, through your guidance or career office, or through career books in your classroom or library.Take notes of the information you want to include in your brochure.
  3. Create a brochure that highlights the information that you collected on your career. Make sure toinclude the following.
  • What type of work do people in this career perform?
  • What is the current salary of this occupation?
  • What are the working conditions? Inside/Outside? Office/Plant/Lab?
  • What are the major job responsibilities?
  • Is there a demand for this job in the future?
  • What kind of education is needed for this type of work?
  • Provide a picture of an engineer working in this field.

  1. What impact do you think engineers will have on your future?
  1. Do you think you’d be interested in pursuing a career in engineering? Why or why not?
