Learn how the Healthy Active Children Policy and Local Wellness Policy requirements work in tandem and are important tools for local educational agencies in promoting student wellness, preventing and reducing childhood hunger and obesity, and providing assurance that local school nutrition guidelines meet the minimum federal nutrition standards.

Healthful Living Essential Standards Meet Reality

There are the NC Essential Standards for Healthful Living… and then there is the reality of implementing all in the school setting. Thirty-five interviews were completed with administrators from the central education office, such as a principal or curriculum lead and at least two health education teachers in each of the eight education districts. This session will provide an overview of this qualitative project re: implementation of healthful living, with a focus on Reproductive Health and Safety. Hear what your colleagues are saying and join the discussion re: what are the challenges, what resources are used, how much time is spent on Reproductive Health and Safety, and more!

We'll talk about research-based family engagement, strategies and ideas for your SHAC, how meaningful family engagement can make your SHAC more valuable to your district, and why you should be an advocate for family engagement. We'll also discuss how you can strengthen family engagement in your local wellness policy.

Keeping SHACs Energized – Celebrations and Challenges

The presentation will begin with 3 general questions: Why are WSCC health and wellness programs in schools important? What is working and not working in our schools with the model's application? What is working so far with SHACs in getting the model "out there" and used in schools. Then we will dive into HOW the Asheville-Buncombe NC SHAC grew their "council", where they are now, and how they are making (and not making) strides with their 52 schools in Asheville City and Buncombe County. The presentation will include the 7 Steps to Creating and Implementing Your School's Health and Wellness Program incorporating the WSCC model.

Mental Health First Aid and Trauma Services in NC

This session will focus on the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and an overview of an exciting program in North Carolina called Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). MHFA offers all child serving professionals tangible skills to identify potential mental health concerns and to intervene in an appropriate, safe way. Similar to the skills needed to help someone who may need medical First Aid (CPR for example), MHFA is a must for all communities. Join this session to learn about ACEs, MHFA as well as a discussion about how the Department of Health and Human Services can support SHAC leaders in their communities.

NC School Health Center/School Nurse Program Defined

The session will define distinct objectives for both the NC School Health Center (SHC) program and the NC School Nurse program, making efforts to clarify the role of each program. The session will also detail how the School Nurse Program and the SHC Program engages with local SHACS, including specific engagement with the Forsyth County SHAC.

This session with bring three state expertsfrom The NC Division of Public Healthtogether to share important information that your SHAC is sure to find useful. One expert will describe the new landscape of e-cigarettes and other emerging tobacco products, like little cigars and hookah. A second expert will share the new Healthy Out of School Time recognition program and Active Routes to School. And finally, the third expert will discuss the grant funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish and support healthy eating and PE/PA strategies in five North Carolina LEA's.
