READ CAREFULLY

Monday, September 30 and Tuesday, October 1

Sipsey Valley High School

Rising juniors and seniors in the Tuscaloosa area are invited to register for the Fall ACT Crash Class. For the past seven years, Hillcrest High School has offered an ACT preparatory class designed specifically to raise ACT scores for college entrance and/or scholarship opportunities. The class has produced outstanding results as ACT recently named Hillcrest High School as a high performing school based on the 2011 class’s ACT scores that were higher than both the state and national averages. At the start of the 2013-2014 school year, Sipsey Valley High School also launched an ACT preparatory class and will serve as the host site for this fall’s ACT Crash Class.

Benefits:

The ACT Crash Class is designed to offer targeted instruction for optimal results. Participants will receive the following:

  • content lectures in all four areas plus writing
  • group and independent practice tests
  • full length practice test plus immediate score feedback
  • troubleshooting for personal areas of weakness
  • testing strategies
  • tips for managing testing anxiety and time management

Veteran Instructor: Amber Barnes

The ACT Crash Class participants will receive instruction from Amber Barnes - the creator of the original ACT Preparatory classes offered at Hillcrest High School and Sipsey Valley High School. Mrs. Barnes has taught in the Tuscaloosa County School System for 12 years and has offered ACT instruction and tutoring for the past seven years.

Preparation Now:

The single most determining factor for ACT success is READING. Consistently reading a variety of texts (news articles, challenging books, short stories, magazine articles, etc.) exposes students to a wide array of syntactical structures, vocabulary, and content. Also, daily reading increases speed and comprehension skills for students, both of which are crucial for competitive ACT scores. It is strongly recommended for all ACT Crash Class participants to devote at least 30 minutes of reading time per day leading up to the test!

Items to Purchase and/or Bring:

Participants should purchase and bring the following items to EACH session:

  • Copy of The Real ACT Prep Guide(ISBN: 0-7689-1975-4 or ISBN: 0-7689-3440-0)
  • Watch (digital preferred)
  • Pencils, pens, highlighters, calculator
  • Plenty of paper along with a 3-ring binder
  • A copy of ALL past ACT scores with the score breakdown for each content area

Expectations for Success:

Participants must commit to the following to gain the best results from the ACT Crash Class:

  • Sign up to take the October ACT no later than September 27, 2013
  • Be punctual for and attend each session
  • Come prepared with ALL necessary materials each day
  • Be attentive and dedicated to the task of improving your ACT score
  • Have a positive attitude and strong work ethic
