Generating a Public/Private Key Pair for Windows

  1. Download a copy of PuTTYgen from (recommended: 64-bit putty.zip):
  2. Run PuTTYgen.exe from the location to where you downloaded it. The initial screen should look like this:

Note: Ensure that RSA is selected and 2048 bits are specified.
  3. Click the “Generate” button. Follow the instructions to move the mouse around the blank area:
  4. When the key is generated you will see the following screen:

At this point, you should copy the public key from the copy paste area and paste it into the Public Key field on the Account Request Form.
  5. Fill in the “Key passphrase” and “Confirm passphrase” fields with a password/phrase you will be able to remember – YOU WILL NEED THIS AGAIN.
  6. Click “Save Public Key”. You will be prompted to select where to save it and what to name it. Save it anywhere and name it whatever you wish.
  7. Click “Save Private Key”. Again you will be prompted to select where to save it and what to name it, though it will have the extension “.ppk”. Save this where you wish but make sure it is NOT in a publicly accessible area. This is your private key and giving it away is equivalent to telling someone your password.
  8. You can now close PuTTYgen.
