QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW
The Certa Entry Level Certificate in Independent Living – Living in the Community (Entry 3) is a nationally recognised qualification. It meets the needs of learners working at Entry 3, who need some support with their learning, including people with learning difficulties and disabilities. The qualification will help them gain the knowledge and skills they need to live independentlyin their local community.
What does this qualification cover?
The qualification has 15 Credits so learners will need to study for about 150 hours.
There is one mandatory unit, Living in the Community. This helps learners to work out what they already know about their local community, what they would like to learn, and to plan how they might reach their goals.
A wide range of other units cover topics such as:
  • Accessing Community Facilities, eg,accessing commercial services, financial services
  • Rights and Responsibilities, eg, living in a diverse society, law and order
  • Personal Development, eg making choices, understanding relationships
  • Leisure Activities, eg accessing information online and using email.
Learners can choose from these units, to make a course that meets their individual needs.
What specific knowledge, skills and competences will the learner develop?
Learners will develop:
  • a knowledge of aspects of living in the community, eg, local public facilities and how these might be used, local community interest groups and what they do
  • an awareness of what they already know, can do andhave learned, what their goals are, and which agencies they can go to for help
  • a range of skills in living in the community, eg, unaided, cross the road where there is no pedestrian crossing, identify a range of road signs and state what they mean.
Who is this qualification for?
The Entry 3Certificate is suitable for learners who:
  • want to develop a range of skills for living independently in their community
  • need some support fortheir learning
  • are beyond Entry 2 but not yet ready for study at Level 1
  • do not have any formal qualifications, or who have the Certa Entry 2 Certificate
  • wish to have their further learning recognised by a formal qualification.
Are there any age restrictions?
The Entry 3 Certificate is for learners aged 14 years or over.
Do learners need any prior qualifications, attainment or experience?
There are no formal entry requirements
How are learners assessed?
Tutors assess the Entry 3 Certificate by tasks that learners build into a portfolio of work as their learning progresses. There are no formal examinations or tests. Many assessments are very practical, eg, asking individual learners to cross the road safely where there is no pedestrian crossing, unaided.
All assessments will be in English (or British Sign Language by arrangement with Certa).
Are there different versions of this qualification? If so, why should learners choose this one?
Certa has three qualifications that prepare learners for living in the community. This one is an Entry 3 Certificate. There is also an Entry 1 Certificate, and an Entry 2 Certificate. Learners should choose this one if they
  • are beginning to be able to learn without support
  • may need some support with their learning, but not as much as a person at Entry 2
  • are not at Entry 2 but are not yet ready for study at Level 1
  • have studied living in the community before, or already have some independent skills
  • want to learn how to live independently in their local community.

WHAT COULD THIS QUALIFICATION LEAD TO?
The Entry 3 Certificate is the final step on the qualification ladder for learners who want to learn to live independently in their local community.
Will the qualification lead to employment? If so, in which sector or job role, at what level?
This qualification is not available in an apprenticeship, and does not lead directly to employment. However, it will support learners who are on their journey to independence. The Entry 3 Certificate may increase their confidence and their chances of gaining employment in the future.
Will the qualification support progression to further learning?
The Entry 3 Certificate is the final step on the qualification ladder for learners who want to learn to live independently in their local community.

Certa developed the Entry 3 Certificate with a number of Centres that specialise in supporting learners with learning difficulties and disabilities. This makes sure the Entry 3 Certificate prepares learners for living independently and with confidence within their local community.
Learners may have the confidence to progress onto a range of courses at Level 1, such as:
  • Certa Level 1 Diploma in Progression
  • Certa Level 1 Diploma in Work Preparation
  • Certa Level 1 Diploma in Skills for Further Learning and Employment.
