The Accessible Britain Challenge – Template Guidance

We have had a number of requests for a format for case studies or good practice for the Accessible Britain Challenge. To help you we have put together the following template. If you already have your own format then please provide your contributions as they are.

We are looking for sufficient information to give the reading a good understanding of thegood practice, work, project, initiative etc and links and contact details for further information. Contributions should be no more than 2 pages of A4, if you can get it on one page then all the better.

There is a word count/limit applied for the majority of the headings (the exceptions being Related Documents).

You do not have to use the maximum word count, use bullets if it’s helpful:

Summary (Maximum 150 Words)

The Good Life:
  • Improves and promotes health and wellbeing by increasing social inclusion for everyone, using an Asset Based Community Development Approach
  • Is a mechanism through which a wide range of services, clubs and activities can be linked to offer alternatives to traditional service provision, such as day care centres, offering improved choice and quality and reducing reliance on services and in turn long term care costs.
  • Ensures that people with high medium and low level needs are assisted to take part in activities and services available as part of their community, rather than separate to it.
By:
Connecting individuals, groups, businesses and organisations so that everyone is aware of what is available and more people can take part
Creating a recognisable brand to ensure people who are in need know about services available
Activities and actions everyone can do to help ourselves and each other

Objective (Maximum 100 Words)

The Good Life Platform takes an asset based community development approach to:
  • Provide better quality, improved choice and access
  • Promote independence and encourage participation within the community, rather than creating dependence and isolation through traditional service provision, which often sees those with specific needs as being treated separate to the community.
  • Improve health and mental wellbeing
  • Enable individuals to positively contribute within the community
  • Ensure nobody falls into gaps between services
  • Create efficiencies, reduce duplication and enable collaborative and better use of resources and spend
  • Reduce long term care costs

Activity and achievements (Maximum 250 Words)

Activity and achievements
Strong foundations implemented:
  • A locality approach
  • “Connect”the rural transport service,
  • Village Agents
  • Good Life Website
A Locality Commissioning Partnership has been established; partners work cooperatively on various projects which create The Good Life.
A community based approach to building and testing the model.
The Good Life has:
  • Enhanced community cohesion between residents and between commissioners and providers particularly 3rd sector
  • Improved the knowledge of all the assets the area has to offer which has assisted statutory providers when preparing case studies and reviews
  • Supported enhanced partnership working
  • Provided a platform for efficient and co-donated use of grant allocations and a mechanism for identifying and filling gaps in provision
Events raising awareness, signposting and networking within the community between organisations, individuals and clubs. Within the first half of 2014 over 120 people from a wide range of organisations received training on 14 different topics, including dealing with sight loss delivered by Guide Dogs and use of assistive technology.
The Good Life Model of Care and inclusion is already benefiting a group of people with learning difficulties, who traditionally were provided care in a social day care setting that have now been enabled to make positive contributions and interact as part of the community, this is described in the picture below (a larger version is included in the links and documents)

Key Lessons Learned (Maximum 150 Words)

The key lesson has been to ensure that the Good Life benefits everyone, including those who are working and providing services in the community and to create a brand which offers shared ownership.
A community based day to create a shared vision, build and test the model ensure engagement and helped to ensure links between organisations and the community provided great value. The picture below captures the outcomes from this initial day.

Establishment of the Locality Commissioning Partnership and its approach has been essential to link a variety of organisations which areworking collectively to:
  • Increase inclusion for people who use their services
  • Improve health and wellbeing through enabling increased activity
  • Create social inclusion opportunities by setting up new services without knowledge of existing assets.
