Access Statement for King's College

Introduction

King’s College welcomes visitors to its iconic Chapel and extensive grounds. A visit to the College includes seeing the world’s largest fan vaulted ceiling, medieval stained glass, an informative exhibition and the Adoration of the Magi by Rubens.
We are a member of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme.
King's College Chapel is accessible to wheelchair users.

Pre-Arrival

  • Cambridge railway station is located 1.25 miles from King's College. (30-40 minute walk) Frequent 'Citi' routes 1, 3 & 7 serve Cambridge rail station to/from the city centre. For route maps and timetables:
  • There are five Park and Ride sites located around the city which provide regular services into the city centre. More information can be found at
  • The Guided Busway runs from Huntingdon to Trumpington and stops in the city centre. This can be accessed from St Ives, Longstanton and Trumpington Park & ride sites. More information can be found at

  • Beware of bikes and uneven paving on King's Parade leading to King's College.

Car Parking

  • 10 Blue Badge spaces are available on King's Parade outside King's College.
  • Grand Arcade city car park is the closest to King's College with 27 designated spaces which allow the first 3 hours parking free.

Arrival at King’s College

  • Tickets for King’s College are purchased from the Visitor Centre on King’s Parade opposite the main gate.
  • The King's College Visitor Centre has limited access due to the historic nature of the building but staff assistance is available on request. It is located on a busy street opposite the main attraction.
  • Access is via one step and the door width is 840mm.
  • There are wide access areas within the Visitor Centre with accessible display racks and assistance available on request.
  • Access to the rear of the Visitor Centre is via a 740mm corridor.
  • The counter is accessible to customers when served from the side.

Chapel Entrance

  • The pedestrian entrance to King’s College Chapel is via Senate House Passage (Five minutes’ walk). Directions will be given from the Visitor Centre when purchasing tickets.
  • The visitor entrance to King's College Chapel is accessed by one step into the ticketing area followed by a further five steps of 15mm depth with handrail up to the door of the main attraction.
  • The door into the Chapel is heavy and there is a step into it - assistance from staff is available on request.
  • For wheelchair access to King's College please enquire at the main gate where Visitor Guides are available to help. Wheelchair access is via the South Door where there is a ramp with handrail available.

Attraction (displays, exhibits, rides etc.)

  • Virtual tour of the Chapel
  • Free leaflets are available inside the main attraction allowing visitors to follow a self-guided tour.
  • The main areas of the Chapel are fully accessible with wide aisles to pass through.
  • There is seating located throughout the Chapel for visitors to use.
  • Access from the ante-chapel to the choir area is via an access ramp to the right of the organ screen.
  • There is restricted access to the side chapels with entry via a steep worn step.
  • Access to the Memorial Chapel is via four uneven steps.
  • Access to the exhibition area is via a ramp or two steps with handrail. The first three rooms of the exhibition are fully accessible with wide openings between rooms. The fourth room is accessed via three steps and a 610mm doorway. Access to the fifth room is via a 610mm doorway.
  • The final exhibition room containing information about the stained glass can be accessed from the ante-chapel via a 670mm doorway.
  • The exhibition area is well lit with accessible information panels.
