QUILCENE SCHOOL DISTRICT

ACCEPTABLE COMPUTER/NETWORK USE AGREEMENT FORM

We are pleased to offer students and staff of Quilcene School District access to the district computers for electronic email, Internet and its vast resources. To gain access to email and the Internet, all students must obtain parental permission and must sign and return the permission form. Access to email and the Internet enables students to explore thousands of libraries, databases and bulletin boards allowing the exchange of messages with Internet users throughout the world. Families are warned that some material accessible via the internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people.

While we have established rules and procedures to provide a safe, supervised learning environment, as well as to make the Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. We believe that the benefits students derive from access to the Internet in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration exceed any disadvantages.

We also reserve the right to review e-mail sent or received on the district system to improve student safety and system integrity, and you and your child must waive the copyright on any material posted through the network.

Ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their children should follow when using media and information sources. To that end, the Quilcene School supports and respects each family’s right to decide whether or not to apply for access.

DISTRICT INTERNET AND E-MAIL RULES

  • Network access by students is by staff permission only
  • Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks just as they are in a classroom or a school hallway. Communications on the network are often public in nature. General school rules for behavior and communications apply.
  • The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Access to the network computers is given to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Parent permission is required. Access is a privilege-not a right. Access entails responsibility. Individual users of the district computer networks are responsible for their behavior and communications over these networks. It is required that users will comply with district standards and will honor the agreements they have signed. Beyond the clarification of such standard, the district is not responsible for monitoring or controlling the communications of individuals utilizing the network.
  • Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files stored on district servers will always be private.

Acceptable network use by district students and staff include:

  1. Creation of files, projects, videos, web pages and podcasts using network resources in support of education and research;
  2. Participation in blogs, wikis, bulletin boards, social networking sites and groups and the creation of content for podcasts, e-mail and webpages that support education and research;
  3. With parental permission, the online publication of original educational material, curriculum related materials and student work. Sources outside the classroom or school must be cited appropriately;
  4. Staff use of the network for incidental personal use in accordance with all district policies and procedures;
  5. Connection of personal electronic devices (wired or wireless) including portable devices with network capabilities to the district network after checking to confirm that the device is equipped with up-to-date virus software, compatible network card and is configured properly. Connection of any personal electronic device is subject to all procedures in this document.

Unacceptable network use by district students and staff includes but is not limited to:

  • Intentionally misusing or damaging computers, computer systems or networks;
  • Violating copyright laws;
  • Using another’s password;
  • Trespassing in another’s folder, work or files;
  • Intentionally wasting limited resources;
  • Changing or attempting to change or reconfigure hardware, software or network resources without the permission of the instructor;
  • Use for personal gain, commercial solicitation and compensation of any kind;
  • Actions that result in liability or cost incurred by the district;
  • Downloading, installing and use of games, audio files, video files, games or other applications (including shareware or freeware) without permission or approval from the instructor;
  • Support for or opposition to ballot measures, candidates and any other political activity;

  • Unauthorized access to other district computers, networks and information systems;
  • Cyber-bullying, hate mail, defamation, harassment of any kind, discriminatory jokes and remarks;
  • Information posted, sent or stored online that could endanger others (e.g., bomb construction, drug manufacturing);
  • Accessing, uploading, downloading, storage and distribution of obscene, pornographic or sexually explicit material; or
  • Attaching unauthorized devices to the district network. Any such device will be confiscated and additional disciplinary action may be taken.

Computer & Network Use Parent Permission Form

We have established the above procedures and rules regulating the materials and communications on the Internet, but be advised that there are unacceptable and controversial materials and communications in the Internet. The school district will make reasonable efforts to filter materials and supervise students. But it is not possible for the District staff to provide direct supervision of each computer at all times. As a parent, you are encouraged to consider the potential of your child being exposed to inappropriate material in your decision as to whether or not to sign the informed consent form, which is required prior to student access to the Internet. Violations may result in the loss of access as well as other disciplinary or legal action.

In consideration for the privilege of using the network and for having access to the public networks, I hereby release Quilcene School District, the K-20 Network, and other intermediary providers, if any, operators and any institutions with which they are affiliated from any and all claims and damages of any nature arising from my, or my child’s use, or inability to use, the K-20 Network including, without limitation, the type of damages identified in the Quilcene School District Electronic Recourses Policy 2022.

Further, my child and I agree to abide by the District’s Policy and Procedures for Electronic Information Systems, which we have reviewed and understand, and we acknowledge that failure to comply with the policy and procedures may result in revocation of network use privileges. My child and I acknowledge and agree that Quilcene School District has the right to review, edit or remove any materials installed, used, stored or distributed on or through the network or District’s system including e-mail and other electronic messages and we hereby waive any right of privacy which my child or I may otherwise have into such material. My child and I acknowledge and agree that any copyright my child may have in material posted on the Internet through the school district’s system is waived.
