Elected International Section Officers for 2015-17

John Cencich, Chair (moves up from Vice-Chair)

Harry Rhea, Vice Chair

Executive Counselors: Nadine Connell, Marlyn Jones, Vesna Markovic, Yuliya Zabelina
Immediate Past President: Jay Albanese

Accomplishments and Information:

1. New IS listserv continued from 2013 to present - In the past, each incoming IS Chair had to re-establish the IS listserv at their own university. This was a slow, inefficient, and uncertain process. The IS Exec Board decided at its meeting (March 2013 in Dallas) to permit establishment of a standing listserv with a commercial provider, so that the IS listserv remains continuous and updated.

Status: a listserv has been established with GoogleGroups, and it is now in use, and can be used indefinitely into the future. We have 200+ members of the listserv, and 100+ current paid members of the Section, so the listserv is used to remind folks of why it is useful to be a paid member!

2. Two New IS Awards Established in 2014 were continued for 2015 - The IS Exec Board approved our proposal from Dallas to establish two new awards beginning in 2014: "Outstanding Book Award" and "Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award." Two committees of IS members were established for the selection process. The Awards consist of plaques/certificates and a cash award ($500 and $250, respectively).

Status: Separate awards committees were established to review nominations and recommend recipients for the 2015 awards, which will be awarded in Orlando (nominations were solicited via our Section listerv).

4. IS web site - the IS web site was established in 2012, and it is one of the best of the ACJS section websites! Status: an update of the webpage occurred in June, 2014 to reflect on activities of the 2014 annual meeting "sections"). We will update again in 2015 after the Annual Meeting in Orlando, reflecting new award winners, activities, officers, and photos.

5. IS Journal - The section is affiliated with the Sage journal International Criminal Justice Review. The editor has been Dean Dabney (also on our IS Exec Bd). Status: The journal editor will make a brief presentation at our Annual Awards Reception.

6. IS membership and presence - current International Section membership hovers around 100 (N=104 in 2014), and it could be larger. Annual dues are only $20, and they include a 'free' subscription to the journal International Criminal Justice Review. We are always looking for ways to increase membership. Status: Our new section awards, Section listserv, and no cost lunch at the annual meeting should help drive interest in the Section.

Plans for the Coming Year:

A. Three International Section awards will be presented at the 2015 annual meeting in Orlando:
Gerhard Mueller Award (for international scholarship and leadership), the IS Outstanding Book Award, and IS Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award.

Status: Separate committees were formed to review nominees for these awards and winners have been selected.

Mueller Award for Distinguished Contributions to International/Comparative Criminal Justice

Recipient: William Alex Pridemore, Georgia State University

Selection committee: John Cencich (chair), Jim Finckenauer, Karen McElrath, Allan Patenaude

International Section Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award

Recipient: Ming-Li ”Lily" Hsieh, Washington State University

Selection committee: Daniela Peterka-Benton (chair), Nadine M. Connell, Cory R. Lepage, Steven Wood

International Section Outstanding Book Award

Recipient: Rosemary Barberet for Women, Crime and Criminal Justice: A Global Enquiry (Routledge 2014)

Selection committee: Sesha Kethineni (chair), Janice Joseph, Min Xie

B. Change for International Section Luncheon – food costs at the annual meeting continue to skyrocket, so lunches cost $40+ which prices out most students and many assistant professors---precisely the people we most want to attend the event and become involved in the section! These prohibitive costs discourage the broad participation we aim for.

In consultation with the ACJS National Office, we proposed to change our annual event held during the ACJS Meeting to the “International Section Awards Reception” during which we would conduct our annual business, highlighted by the Mueller Award, Outstanding Book Award, and Graduate Student Paper Award. This event would be open to all ACJS participants without charge in order to attract widest possible audience.

The International Section chair was able to negotiate with the conference hotel this year for a lower price for a "boxed lunch," so the Section will pay for 50 of these lunches and provide them without charge to those attending. The reception and "free" lunch was announced via our Section listserv. We hope to continue this in the future as Section funds permit in order to provide lunch or at least subsidize it.

Status: the International Section Awards Reception (with lunch) will be held on March 5 at 12:30pm.

C. A completely new Comparative and International Criminal Justice Course Guide was composed and edited, relying on contributions from our members during 2014. It contains course outlines, commentary, and sample assignments from faculty in the field who have taught courses on comparative criminal justice, international criminal justice, transnational crime, and a variety of related topics. It is designed for pedagogical use. Status: The 60-page publication will be officially released at the 2015 meeting in Orlando.

Respectfully submitted,
-Jay Albanese, Chair, ACJS International Section
