WAM Summer Programs and Workshops Opportunities

WAM scholarship application forms are due to the WAM committee no later than April 30.

REMINDER: Students must be accepted into the program prior to applying for the scholarship from WAM. The WAM scholarships will be given directly to the program to go towards the student’s tuition.

Any math or science-related program will be considered for WAM scholarships. Students must applyfor the summer program and be accepted in order to be eligible for the scholarships. Most programs will defer payment of fees until WAM scholarships have been awarded at M3 in May. Some programs also have their own scholarship programs. Due to limited scholarship funding, only partial scholarships may be available for certain programs.

DUKE University – SAT Test Prep

The Duke Test Prep Program offers high-quality test preparation classes in an affordable and convenient format. These classes stress the skills that are critical for your best performance on the SAT: test-taking techniques; time-management skills; logical reasoning; verbal ability; and mathematical competence.

Fee: $505 per session (text and materials included).

Courses will be held on Thursday evenings during the Spring and Fall semesters. Each session is from 6pm to 9pm at the Bishops House on East Campus of Duke University. For dates please check the website

DUKE University – Computer Camp

Program Highlights:

  • Create video games, storyboards, interactive projects
  • Learn computer concepts, techniques, and programming skills that can be applied in more advanced programming
  • Develop problem solving and critical thinking skills

Program is a week long program Mon to Fri 8:30am to 5pm.

North Carolina Central University

Each year North Carolina Central University offers an outreach program of academic enrichment opportunities for children. The camps also give participants the opportunity to experience life on a college campus. Camp fees vary according to the activity and cover housing and meals for the length of the camp.

Durham County 4H –Computer Boot Camp

Emergency Response Week is a CSI based program. Students will learn the basics of digital photography, as well as engage in hands-on-scientific experimental and evidence collection and much more.

Computer Boot Camp will allow the students to take the computer apart then put it back together in working condition. The students take the computer home at the end of camp.

NC State University–2014Engineering Summer Program

Each summer, the College of Engineering at NC State University offers High School students the opportunity to experience engineering, science and technology at NC State.

In 2014, we will have a multi-disciplinary week-long day camp for rising 9th and 10th graders. The week long day-camp will introduce students to a variety of engineering fields through fun, yet challenging, hands-on projects and investigations. By the end of the week, students will have a deeper understanding of the field of engineering and related career opportunities.

iD Tech Camps at UNC Chapel Hill

This is the second decade hosting summer camps in North Carolina at our UNC Chapel Hill location. We strike the right balance between off-computer activities (creative games, sports, life skills, etc.) and essential technology education to foster STEM skill development.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is home to Space Camp, Aviation Challenge and NASA's Official Visitor Information Center for Marshall Space Flight Center.

Space Academy® incorporates real world applications of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Trainees will prepare to become the new generation of lunar explorers, with hands-on activities that place them in the role of spacecraft designers and astronauts on the moon.

Trainees experience walking on the moon in our 1/6th Gravity Chair and feel what it’s like to work in a frictionless environment in our Manned Maneuvering Unit. They’ll build and launch (weather permitting) a two-stage rocket and learn teamwork and leadership at Area 51, our leadership reaction course. Generally, arrival for this program is on Sunday from 12 - 2:30 p.m. and graduation is 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Graduation usually lasts around one hour.

NC State University – 2013Veterinary Camp Program

VetCAMP (Veterinary Camp) is a five day summer camp program that offers an opportunity for High School students interested in the field of veterinary medicine. The camp is designed for students who are interested in becoming veterinary healthcare professionals and provides a preview into the real and vast fields of veterinary medicine. Through presentations, demonstrations, laboratories, visits, and in-depth, hands-on activities students will discover what modern veterinary medicine is all about.

PROMYS: Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists

Join 80 mathematically ambitious high school students, 20 counselors, research mentors, faculty, guest lecturers, and visiting alums for six weeks of joyfully rigorous mathematical exploration at Boston University.

PROMYS has the following goals:

• To provide an environment for young people that will arouse their curiosity and encourage a deep personal involvement with the creative elements in mathematics

• To foster interaction between the PROMYS community and the larger community of research mathematicians and scientists currently working in academia and industry

• To encourage habits of thought that lead to scientific independence and creativity
