  1. Please provide a concise, yet comprehensive, statement that explains the reasons for requesting the change. Include documentation or assessment information supporting the specific request (if possible).

The Department of English proposes to change the foreign language requirement for the graduate major in Creative Writing within the Master of Arts Program in English by eliminating the option for students to demonstrate foreign language competence by taking courses that present works of foreign literature exclusively in English translation. If this proposal were to be accepted, students would be required to demonstrate foreign language competence by taking a language examination administered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies or by presenting credit for six hours of college-level coursework in a single foreign language completed with a grade of “A,” “B,” or “C.”
This proposal would make the foreign language requirement for the graduate major in Creative Writing consistent with the foreign language requirements for all of the other majors (Composition and Rhetoric, Teaching English as a Second Language, Traditional Studies, and Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century Studies) within the Master of Arts Program in English. The proposed change also reflects best practices within the field of English Studies, as graduate programs in the field almost uniformly require students to demonstrate foreign language competence and always require that they do so by completing coursework in a foreign language. The goal of such requirements and of the proposed change to the graduate major in Creative Writing is to insure that students acquire breadth and depth of understanding of the structures and the history of the English language as it relates to at least one other language, a goal that cannot be achieved if students study only translated texts and have no direct contact with another language. The department’s experience with students in its other four graduate majors, who are required to complete six hours of college-level coursework in a single foreign language with a grade of “C” or higher, indicates that those students who have earned at least a “C” in their college-level foreign language coursework are able to demonstrate the desired breadth and depth of understanding of the structures and the history of the English language as it relates to another language.
The Department of English further proposes to eliminate the requirement that students submit a twenty-page writing sample during their first semester of enrollment. Students pursuing the graduate major in Creative Writing submit more than fifty pages of original work in each of their Creative Writing seminars each semester, beginning during their first semester of enrollment, and their work from theseseminars is routinely reviewed by program faculty as part of the department’s ongoing assessment program. As a result, the submission of an additional twenty-page writing sample is unnecessary.
Finally, the Department of English proposes to correct the language in the Graduate Catalog page’s description of thesis requirements for this major, as part of the standard text of this statement has been omitted from the current edition of the Graduate Catalog, producing a sentence that is confusing and difficult to read.
