Overview

A pleasant circular walk starting at the pretty village green in Tilford and stopping half way around at The Donkey at Charles Hill. Much of the walk is sheltered by trees and so is a good choice for windy winter days. This is easy walking along a series of country lanes, footpaths and tracks.

The Donkey is nestled in the dip at Charles Hill and is a small and cosy village pub with a warm welcome and friendly staff. It features in The Good Pub Guide and certainly deserves its place there. There is plenty of outdoor seating in the garden

The food is not cheap by pub standards but it has an interesting menu and is restaurant quality. It serves Abbot Ale, London Pride plus a good cup of tea.

Directions to Start

At Tilford, park in the gravel car park just across the village green from the Barley Mow pub (this is not the pub we plan to call at on the walk).

The Walk

1.  Leave the car park and turn right onto the road, crossing over the lovely old stone bridge.

2.  Go past the village shop and continue until the playing fields on your left where you cross the road and fork right down Whitmead Lane.

3.  At the 40mph speed limit signs, turn to the left and then immediately right onto the private road and public footpath. At the gate to Archers Hill house take the public footpath that veers off to the right.

4.  When you get to the clearing and the wooden shed, the footpath continues straight ahead at the side of a gate as it skirts around the left hand side of a private property.

5.  When you meet the road, cross over and go straight ahead, following the green public footpath sign.

6.  At the tarmac drive, cross over and continue straight on again by the green post.

7.  At the second drive you come to, opposite the entrance to April Cottage, turn left and follow either the road or the footpath that runs parallel to the road on the right hand side.

8.  When you meet the main road, turn right onto this road, taking great care as there is no pavement here. Continue downhill and about the time the pub sign comes into view ahead, take the byway with the red marker and finger sign that forks down to the right through the trees.

9.  On reaching tarmac again, cross over and continue straight on, bearing left, and The Donkey pub soon comes into view ahead of you.

10.  TIME FOR REFRESHMENT

11.  On leaving the pub, turn immediately left and walk back up the hill. At the junction of byways turn left.

12.  Keep going until you come to the road by the entrance to Whitmead. At the hairpin bend here take the lower road. When you reach the 30mph speed limit signs, go straight ahead.

13.  When you get to the main road, turn left and continue back over the stone bridge and left again to return to the car park.
