“INSIDE THE BOX”

Every day we are bombarded by strong images of masculinity and femininity. The roles that men and women play in biological, social and cultural contexts are an inexhaustible point of discussion. Gender is a theme that always remains a current topic of conversation. This is why it is an excellent starting point for circus theatre.

One of the most popular ideas surrounding the gender theme in circus is the relationship between a man and a woman and what attracts them (or not!) to each other. In a circus and acrobatic context it is almost impossible to avoid, especially if you look at the previous productions from Fullstop, where the relationship of a couple took central roles. “Waiting on you” looks at the first time a new couple meets and in “Is it me?” the story of a couple’s dying love for each other unfolds. Fullstop now wants to leave this frequently trodden path and bring something totally new to the stage.

Outside The Box…

...is our new street theatre performance that premiered in July 2014 during the La Strada Festival in Bremen, Germany, but this dossier is about Inside the Box! The show is based on Outside the Box, but we want to utilize the possibilities that an indoor location can bring (light, sound, more intimate focus) to take the performance to a higher level. Inside the Box will be created for an audience of 10+ years.

We want to bring aerial acrobatics into spaces where is it is not normally possible to rig. Often there are little or no possibilities to hang aerial equipment. Our rig is 5.5m high, which is just enough for many theatres. The rig also offers many choreographic possibilities for climbing in, jumping off and sliding down and we also use an in-built counter weighting system for a section of “vertical dance”. In short, the rig is not just a hanging point, but an integral part of the performance.

The performance...

…will comprise of a series of short scenes. Gender lends itself well to a spectrum of ideas that can be presented as light and comical sketches, but also sometimes confronting and sober images. It is the intention that the scenes fit together, ensuring a cohesive end result and not just a random collage of ideas.

An example of a scene...

A young woman is getting ready to go out but what should she wear? Despite the mountain of clothes and shoes that surround her, she has of course, nothing to wear! She tries on different outfits whilst she moves in and out of the Tissu until she finds something suitable for the occasion. Satisfied, she steps out of the door, confident that she looks perfect, but is everything as perfect as it seems? Once she exits, the next scene begins...

His knowledge of comedy, timing, theatre and music has already proved essential in the making of Outside the Box and will without doubt strengthen the creation process of Inside the Box.

About us

Fullstop began in 2005 after we graduated from Circomedia in Bristol. Our two outdoor performances “Is it me?” and “Waiting on you” have toured with success since 2006 and 2008 to Street Theatre and Circus Festivals worldwide. In 2010, together with 2 musicians and 2 artists from Cie EAEO we formed The Lost Company and created “No Mad Land”. We have also performed for Bencha Theater and Cie Willi Dorner. Aside from performing we teach aerial and acrobatics for Circusplaneet in Gent and work as guest teachers for other circus schools and international circus conventions. We live in Gent in Belgium and have 2 sons, Oscar and Milo.

Conditions for setting up the rig

·  Minimal space for building up and taking down: 5m x 13m.

·  Minimal stage dimensions for performance 8m x 6m with a clear height of 5.5m.

·  The stage has to be level.

What do we need now?

We are looking for theatres, cultural centres or festivals that can help us house a tryout. We are organizing a UK tryout tour from 5 – 18 January 2015. Any dates during this period would be welcome to keep travel costs to a minimum. Inside the Box premieres on 6th February 2015 in CC De Steiger, Menen (BE) and we will be back in the UK performing at Jackson’s Lane on 25th February 2015. Can you help us by making your space available to us during these periods? We are open to any form of collaboration.
