About Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre

Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre provides services for adult NHS patients referred by their GP.

We work closely with other NHS and social care services to ensure patients have the right advice and support before and after treatment.

We understand that privacy, dignity and confidentiality are important to our patients and do everything we can to make sure we meet those needs. As a student you will be expected to adhere to these values.

Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre serves the populations of Trent and South Yorkshire, providing high quality specialist care, including hip and knee replacements, shoulder surgery, spine surgery and minor orthopaedic procedures. NHS Choices allows patients and the public to rate and comment on the full range of NHS services. In the latest issue released in 2011, Barlborough NHS treatment centre was voted the 7th most recommended hospital in England and the 2nd cleanest hospital in England.

We are a specialist NHS treatment centre that offers outpatient, day case and inpatient orthopaedic treatments. Our services cover:

·  Hip and knee replacements

·  Knee arthroscopies

·  Hand and foot procedures

·  Soft tissue procedures

·  Anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions

·  Shoulder procedures – Shoulder replacements, rotator cuff repair, subacromial decompression, manipulation under anaesthetic, stabilisation

·  Thoracic and Lumber Spine procedures - Discectomy, laminectomy and epidural injection

We also provide diagnostic procedures and aftercare.

Our on-site facilities include:

·  Outpatients department with x-ray, pharmacy, pathology and physiotherapy services

·  Day case ward with 6 beds

·  Inpatient ward with 36 beds in a mix of single sex four and two bed bays plus single rooms

·  Three operating theatres each equipped with unique air flow systems specifically for orthopaedic surgery

The rehabilitation team is led by Donna Elkington. There are 5 other Full time physiotherapists, 2 Rehabilitation and Discharge coordinators and a rehabilitation assistant. We also employ several bank physiotherapists.

General Information

Please report to the main reception at 9am on your first day unless otherwise advised by your clinical educator prior to your start date. The name of your clinical educator will be advised by your placement team. You should contact your clinical educator prior to your placement on 01246 575044.

You will be allocated a locker where you will be able to store your personal belongings.

Tea and coffee are available in the staff room at no cost. There is café on site which sells sandwiches, jacket potatoes etc but if you prefer to bring your own food there is a fridge, toaster, microwave and a kettle in the staff room which you will be able to use.

Within 5 minutes walk of the hospital there is a fish and chip shop and a Spar which also has a cash machine. Within 10 minutes walk of the hospital there is also a Macdonalds, KFC and Costa Coffee.

Uniform

Barlborough NHS Treatment centre has a requirement for all staff and students to present a professional image to patients and visitors.

Your uniform should be issued by the university and should be worn in a clean and presentable fashion. Your student identification badge should be worn at all times.

Black flat shoes (closed toe) or black trainers should be worn.

The hospital has a bare below elbows policy although a plain wedding ring may be worn.

Hair should be neat and tidy at all times with long hair to be tied back.

Nail varnish and false nails are not permitted. Nails should be sufficiently short to ensure safe patient contact.

Visible tattoos are discouraged and should not be offensive to others. Where they are deemed to be offensive they should be appropriately and discreetly covered.

Working Hours

You will normally be expected to work Monday to Friday from 09.00 – 17.00hrs although there is some flexibility. Please discuss with your clinical educator prior to the start of your placement if you have any special requirements.

No Smoking Policy

Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre is a no smoking hospital. If you wish to smoke you will have to do so outside the hospital boundary with your uniform covered.


Health and Safety

The hospital has policies for health and safety and the control of infection. Your Clinical educator will go through these during your induction.

Confidentiality

Breach of confidentiality is extremely serious and can result in referral to a fitness to practice hearing at SHU.

It can be easy to innocently or accidentally breach the right to confidentiality but the consequences can be extremely distressing to patients, employees and the person involved.

Students must, at all times, both during and after completion of your placement, keep secret and not use any of the information obtained during the term of their placement which is of a confidential nature.
